Advocaat offered the job permenatly

Long term, how can he be mate. He doesn't have long left in the game. It's a shame but the reality.
How about somebody working alongside him like say, Zenden (who's already worked with Benitez) for a few years with the intention of taking over. Just a thought that was all.

When was the last time we had a long term view that ever came close to fruition? I would settle for near term relative success to build on and work from there. Who knows maybe a manager with the credentials of Dick will get players in who we wouldn't have had a hope of attracting with some 40 something manager who's yet to prove anything. Build the team, get some results then look at a longer term managerial appointment.

It's best thing he could do to be honest. At minute everyone loves him and he'll go with a bunch of positive what ifs.
If he stays it's almost guaranteed his head will be being called for by January next year much like Poyet. He was mr popular this time last season if you remember?
Without real significant investment it will be another season of struggle regardless of who's in charge.
The difference being an experienced professional. Advocaat has probably forgotten more about management than Poyet knows right now. Although same could've been said about O'Neill and Bruce I suppose, like you say whatever we need serious investment.

Would be a great appointment, I've actually enjoyed watching us under him, although I suppose anything was an improvement on Gus.

Congerton deserves credit for the appointment that kept us up too

The was a Dutch journo on talkshite this afternoon. Seemed very pally with Advocaat. He said Dick invited him to the AoL last week for the day to show him around. Advocaat was very impressed with the facilities and fans. He said the players attitude in training was excellent. He said Advocaat's wife didn't live in Russia with him and he wouldn't work away from her. I think if he doesn't stay its a message that we won't be spending, because he'll want sound investment.

Of course. It's a tough decision to make to be honest mate. We have a DOF in place who will have a big role to play but thankfully, he has an excellent respect and relationship with DA. DA also has a respect for our club and the DOF. So in essence, everything is in place. The only issue is guarantees of large investment, of which, I am not entirely sure we can commit to due to turnover and the FFP restrictions. Secondly, his age and longevity in the game. He won't be around for the years ahead and will he want a young assistant to just come in and shadow? He has his own team of people who he trusts. So again, another tough dilemma.

Investment is the key and with FFP I have my doubts as to wether this will happen.
Honestly think this time next year advocaats reputation will be down there with Poyet and oneil. Obviously at this minute that seems preposterous but we've been here before .

Are we even able to invest? We can only increase our wage budget by 70k per week...

In theory......It's £4m plus whatever else you shave off......Brown is on £2.5m/year......Fletcher the same, Johnson ditto. Throw in Graham, Giaccherini, Alvarez, Ba, Mavrias, Roberge, Rev......that's probably over £15m/season there for replacements and i wouldn't be surprised if Defoe's £3.5m moves South this summer.

Suppose. But do we have enough scope in the 'losses' column to spend big bucks on transfersz

The whole point of a DoF role is that Head Coaches can come and go and the club maintains continuity throughout its playing, operating and recruitment philosphy. DA seems perfect to be the Head Coach that helps establish that over the next two years before the next man comes through.

There is absolutely a good few players who can be shifted out and we would save a fortune. The issue is that we have to find suitable clubs.
I think we all thought we were doing this last season with clearing out likes of Gardner, bardsley etc. Turned out out wage bill went up!

That's the second part of the equation. We don't have a Benteke or Bony type who would show a huge profit in the accounts and unfortunately we are going to have to sell assets that realise the most profits in the accounts to enable to allow us to reinvest without falling foul of FFP. As it stands that would be players like Johnson, Fletcher, Giaccherini and Cattermole......or, dare i say it Pantilimon. The other option is to try for a big stadium naming rights deal. There's not a lot of scope to invest heavily unfortunately and we'll have to get creative to do so.

Aren't the last accounts for 2013/14 though so won't include the business we did last summer.

Accounts are maybe a year behind so we won't be sure on the exact figures. All I know is that the Rodwell deal is worth an absolute fortune. As is Connor Wickham's new contract.

You could be right but I thought someone had put up a list of premier league clubs wage bills.
I could be wrong.

He has to stay for me!! We've never had a manager with a cv like his and i firmly believe he is the man to take us forward. I reckon a 2 year deal and call it a day at 70 with us a much better place than when he took over. We should however bring in someone to work with him with a view to take over from him when he has gone. Isn't Platini relaxing the rules around FFP due to increasing pressure from the bigger clubs?

If he didnt want to stay, he wouldnt be talking about Short's intentions, willingness to invest, in fact I would have thought that he would already have ruled out staying.

The longer this goes on the more surprised I would be if he quits at this stage - the more I think he is bargaining with the owner when he is in a very strong bargaining position.

Kinda hope he just leaves in the summer and enjoys retirement. I'm not sure he's the right man in the long term.

Don't think we need long term at the minute, we need the ship steadied because evidently it's been anything but steady with these great escapes we have to pull off every time we sack the latest young unproven manager. A year or two of a 'boring midtable finish' is what we need imo and then after that we should/need to look long term.
