two weeks ago, yet to decide.

Dick Advocaat has revealed he was offered the Sunderland manager's job on a permanent basis two weeks ago.

But the Dutchman, who led the club to Premier League safety after replacing Gus Poyet in March, is seeking assurances from chairman Ellis Short over his intentions before committing his future to the Stadium of Light.

Speaking to Sky Sports News HQ, the former Rangers and Holland manager said: "Mr Short made a commitment when he said he wants the club to be in the top 12 on a regular basis, so that means the club has to invest.

"They want me to stay, definitely. They discussed it already a couple of weeks ago but I have to be honest to everybody, to my family and the club. I will take a holiday and in that week I will take a decision and let them know what I will do.

Says Shorts aim is to be top 12 consistently, when he first came his intentions was to reach top 6 at the time but it never happened over the years. It's hard to see Short throwing money in with the FFP and the current wage budget as it is. We are going to have to offload quite a few players and that is not going to be easy either. I do think Advocate is the man we need though, lots of experience at top level and know the direction the club should be going plus it looks as though he has the respect of the players.

Well we will know what's ahead this summer then if he isn't the new manager full time, it's as you were and little spent and another gamble by short we can stay on the money train without putting things right.

Someone with his experience is telling short what needs to be done.

Decision time for short imo, if he won't invest and advocaat leaves we'll be in same position next season most likely
Pretty much my thoughts, we will know what's ahead if he doesn't stay another season of struggle ahead.

I'd rather we did that with someone else. We'll only end up treading water and finding ourselves in the same position quite soon down the line. Not particularly bothered like.
You'd rather a different experienced manager come in for a season? Strange.....he's perfect for that kind of role. He's just exactly what we need right now imo, the players respect him so much. If he gets us a squad and a mentality that we can be higher up in this league before he leaves then it's job done and someone else can come in. A younger coach..

That was my first thought when I heard the interview on SSN just now like.

Spot on I reckon we need several players as discussed in another thread..Short has to find even more money and have to sell at least 5 or 6 players. Eggnog is saying to Short squad us not good enough if I stay how much do I gave to spend!

I'm not that arsed about experience. Alladyce has lots of that, I don't want him either. Would rather we took a gamble on someone but that's just my opinion.

Seems too good to be true though. Has anything like this ever happened before? Seems too patient and forward thinking for us.
I suppose the Anfield glory days were sort of built on this model.
It would seem ideal for DA as he could be much more flexible with his family.
Got to admit the bugger did for me last night with his tears!
