Advocaat offered the job permenatly

I'd rather we did that with someone else. We'll only end up treading water and finding ourselves in the same position quite soon down the line. Not particularly bothered like.
Depends what Advocaat plans on doing and the job that Short wants him to do.

An experienced, respected and connected guy like Dick could really help give us the season of stability and continuity that we've been desperate for for about 4 or 5 years now. Get the squad into better shape, organise us on and off the pitch, and lay the perfect groundwork for someone to come in and take over from. Could make all difference for the next managerial appointment, turn us from a scrambling mess of a squad who just avoided relegation (hardly the most appealing prospect) to a stable and focussed squad ready to finally do something more than fight off relegation each season.

Means a bit of planning though, no point Dick building a squad for some new guy to rip it all up again next summer, and yeah I can't see why we can't do all that under a new manager, but just a thought about the possible reasoning for keeping Advocaat in the job for another season.

I can't believe people wouldn't want him to stay.
He's a top class manager ffs everybody should have known that before he came here and he's simply proven that.
To not keep him would go down as one of the biggest acts of folly this club would ever have done alongside letting a young Brian Clough go.
Who gives a fuck about his age the man has vast knowledge there's no reason why he can't be here for another 2 or 3 years and steady our ship with maybe a younger man working below him.

I'm not that arsed about experience. Alladyce has lots of that, I don't want him either. Would rather we took a gamble on someone but that's just my opinion.
Fair enough mate but it's not worked before and gambling isn't good for you.

Get him in for 1-2 years to work with an up and coming manager - Clement maybe- and to look at the infrastructure of the club, academy, scouting everything.
Exactly mate. Clement would fit in nicely as he's experienced with big clubs are more suitable than any of the "new" managers were linked with. But we need big Dick to get the right squad together as well; quality players as the man says.

Fair enough. I was undecided a couple of weeks ago on whether we should go with youth or experience. I'm now absolutely convinced that experience is the way to go, and advocaat specifically. I don't want anymore gambles until/ if we're an established top ten side. I appreciate that everything can be seen as a gamble with us.....but appointing advocaat would be far less of a gamble than someone like clement.

Makes you wonder how they offered him a permanent job 2 weeks ago though?
What if we had went down, surely we would have needed a different approach.

He isn't a long term option but at the end of the day, long term options don't really exist in football these days, nevermind at our place!

We can never really go for a long term option in my eyes until managers are given full control over the transfers. Yes, we did alright with Defoe but it has not been a good system at all thus far.

But aye, I would like to see him stay. His reaction at full time yesterday was very moving and has shown that he has put a lot of hard work into the club in the short time he has been here.

Try to get him for a year (or two), possibly assisted by his eventual successor, let him build a proper foundation with Congerton, and actually instill some much needed stability.

We've been burned before by hiring new managers solely on the back of a fist-shaking high octane relegation escape act, and in general I don't think that's a wise path to repeat. However, Advocaat is a bit different - unlike Poyet, PDC etc I think he has the experience to move us forward.

Kinda hope he just leaves in the summer and enjoys retirement. I'm not sure he's the right man in the long term.
It's best thing he could do to be honest. At minute everyone loves him and he'll go with a bunch of positive what ifs.
If he stays it's almost guaranteed his head will be being called for by January next year much like Poyet. He was mr popular this time last season if you remember?
Without real significant investment it will be another season of struggle regardless of who's in charge.

Hes turned that shower of shit 4-1-4-1 into a decent looking 4-3-3, seems to have been able to analyse all the players. Changed catt's role, binned vergini and got something out of coates and brown in no time at all.

The man oozes class.

We need him to lay some actual foundations, if only for a season, so that the job will be easier for someone else after him. We aren't in a position to gamble here.
He seems to know what is required and feel with his experience and knowledge can get the money that is required from Short.

Anyway I thought the dof was meant to supply the long term plan.

Also if Dick is only here 1 or 2 years, but does get us further up the league and make the squad stronger, we will be in a position to possibly attract a better manager than we currently could.

Of course we can, wages should look better than last year so there will be room for a few signings. If there isn't we might as well have went down now as nowt will change these players won't suddenly be mint all season.

We are losing best part of £20m every year, unless we suddenly announce some big sponsorship deal then we are extremely limited to how much we can spend according to FFP rules. Its not as simple as just saying Ellis get the chequebook out and spend £40m. I'll be amazed if we spent anymore than we did last season(around £15m), anyone thinking we are going to be spending £30/40m is living in a fantasy land I'm afraid.

I'd be happy with the idea of him being here for 2 to 3 years. Not entirely sure that Clement would agree to the idea of coming in as assistant to learn the trade, learn about the club and eventually takeover. He (Clement) has been a coach and then assistant coach/manager for 19 years, albeit with a 6 or 7 year break and might well feel that he's qualified to be a manager straight off.

I'd love him to be given another year or two (if he wants to) and see what happens as I think he could definitely do a good job, but the sentimental sod in me wants him to retire on a (relative) high and spend his days with the wife, reminiscing on the glory days and the time he saved a pile of shite from going down.

Long term plan is simply to be higher in the league. If dick can help get us there, and make the transition easier for a successor then it's a job well done, from advocaat and Congerton's perspective.
