New Music Releases Thread

Listened to Sulk "Graceless" this morning for the first time and liked it (I know it isn't new in the UK but I hadn't heard it mentioned over here!) - very 1990 Blur doing Stone Roses shoegaze covers.

Now listening to the Drowners album, which I'm liking

Anyone heard any advance stuff from the new Crookes album? I heard / saw the Play Dumb single but not heard anything else from it

I can't see it being much different from Hold Fast. I really like The Crookes but they don't really have much to them! They're on tour through Europe and the UK in a few months, playing the Cluny 2 for anyone interested. Would be good to see a better turn out than last time, it was pretty dead. I'll be going along.

They released these two songs a few months ago, I don't know if you've heard them or not:

Those two aren't on the album like but no doubt it'll follow in their style.

Thanks, yeah, I know what you mean about them not having a huge amount to them, but I really like what they do even so. We're a little behind on them over here - I had Dreams of Another Day and Chasing After Ghosts shipped from home, but I don't think either was really released over here and Hold Fast wasn't released until this October (I think it was a year and a half old at that point) and it has those 2 tracks on the US release. The new one is going to be the first that's actually released at the same time over here so I'm hoping they'll be playing some gigs. 2 "new" albums in less than 6 months so they must be trying to make a bit of a push.
Told one of my mates in Newcastle to get to that Cluny show.

They're playing a load of gigs at SXSW, I think they'll be doing a US tour this year, they seem to enjoy ridiculously long tours. The Little Comets are having some success over there so hopefully The Crookes can follow in their footsteps, they're quite similar jangly guitar bands.

I've really enjoyed everything they've released. Wasn't too keen on Hold Fast at first but I ended up loving it. Still think they're better at the slower less poppy songs, and The I Love You Bridge were the best songs on HF.

I got into them as a result of the Best of 2011 thread on here - might even have been you that posted about Chasing After Ghosts on that thread. HF was definitely more of a grower than the other two but it's got some cracking tunes on it. What do you think of Play Dumb?

I also bought the most recent Little Comets album as a result of this thread and like that too - the NE Vampire Weekend, right? Need to investigate them a bit more.[DOUBLEPOST=1391723093][/DOUBLEPOST]

Almost certainly would have been mate! I don't mind Play Dumb, like I say it's just more of the same, easy to just switch off and listen to.

Little Comets are the same, jangly pop tunes, canny to listen to now and again but that's enough or I get bored quickly. I've kind of worn myself out of them, saw them far too many times last year (4 times I think) and I really, really don't want to hear them again for a long time. Must have seen them about 10 times now, either deliberately or at festivals/support slots.

The Chapman Family are/were my favourite band, honestly gutted they split up because I loved everything they did. Can't believe they didn't even have a big following the in the North East, an real shame. They played the Cluny 2 a few months before they split and the turn out was poor, same goes for the free gig at Pop Recs in town, for a band that puts in everything to every gig and tours all over the country relentlessly I think it just wore them down in the end. There was a very good write up on DiS from Kingsley once they split, have a read , quite a long read mind. I miss their Twitter too, it was one of the funniest on there.

Downloaded the Cruel Britannia EP and some singles (Virgins, Kids, This One's For Love, and We Stick Together) but I did see they had an album a while back that was never released over here - I take you'd say that was worth tracking down?

Definitely. I can email you the mp3's if you'd like?

Not sure about the cd/vinyl, I guess you'd have to import it from Europe.

Huge fan of Field Music from the North-East too - I imagine that's a bit of an obvious one too. Quite hard to relax into some of their songs but great musicians.

Another band I tried out from here - got Tunes of Town (?) and thought it was a bit blah. What would you recommend?
This thread has been great - bought stuff from 9/10 new artists on the strength of it and don't think I've been disappointed by any

I like bits and bobs from Field Music but I've always struggled to get into their albums. I see one of the Brewis brothers all the time in Newcastle, what a claim to fame. ;-)
I prefer Dutch Uncles' take on the whole off kilter pop stuff.

Dutch Uncles are another band I really get on with too. Saw them down here in Nottingham too, really lively, interesting front man and I've had a couple of conversations with the guitarist Sped, who I led to a basement under my student halls for non sexual reasons...
