Think he has been debated for 4 years and people expected improvement. He hasnt done that. Poor touch, weak, erratic shooting, questionable shooting and poor decision making. Pro's, works hard, pace and still young.

Had to be sold.

Pretty much my summary as well, which is why I'm not bothered in the slightest about him leaving and even more so for a good fee.

The proof will be in the pudding of what we bring in. As it stands we are chasing 2 midfielders on one year deals and no news of a striker yet. Will have to see who the striker is if anybody before we make judgement imo
He's been replaced, by Lens.

Selling Wickham should allow us to either bring in someone better for either through the middle or down the right as well as the 2 midfielders you mention. Hoepfully quickly.

Ah, I get it! There is no underlying rationale. You sell whoever you can, when you can. Is that like a fire sale? :)

OK. The team never gets better. I get it. :)
When your transfer policy has left you with shite and saleable not so shite you can only sell one kind. When you HAVE to sell to bring someone better in you HAVE to sell your saleable shite (the clue is in the description). That way you improve the team.

I cant make it any clearer for you to understand without crayons.

I think he still has potential to come good but as quotes this morning confirm, he needed a change and very likely would not have kicked on at Sunderland.

Good move for all concerned.

Leaving out the SAFC side of things, I think he has a cracking chance to do well at Palace. They're a very attack minded team with quick wingers who get a lot of balls into the box, then you have Cabaye who has proved he is an excellent playmaker in the center. A great move for him really.

I doubt sell on clauses between 2 clubs are cancelled when a player signs on for extra years mind

To be honest I don't know, I've always imagined the sell on ran for the length of the initial contract or a set period of time. Maybe someone with inside knowledge can shed some light on this?

I like Wickham tbh, I think he's a talented player. He's still really young and can improve and he was the best of our strikers last season despite being stuck out on the wing. The last time he got a regular chance up front, he got goals.

However... if we were just going to play him out on the wing again, I'd obviously much rather have Lens (or someone like Borini). I think Wickham did pretty well out wide, it is a position he can play but when we have PVA at left-back, we need a left winger that never switches off.

Wickham is better than Fletcher & Graham for sure, and he's a different type of striker to Defoe but I suppose he was the one with the most resale value and that is the main reason he's gone. I would have been reasonably happy with Wickham as our backup striker, less so with the other 2. Fletcher is talented but has serious issues and Graham works hard but can't score. With this sale, we really really need another striker (unless Lens is going to double as a striker), in which case another winger/striker would be useful.

I would have thought that as well.As you could end up having a player for ten years and still have to pay out if you sell him.Seems a bit daft.

5 year contract on his wages + fee is a massive investment for West Ham. Good luck to him, sure he'll enjoy london

:)
You sell your best players to make a better team. Perhaps you could use your crayons to draw a picture of a better team. Created by selling our best players. Lovely.
