That happens everywhere though. The standard of player we go for are pretty much the same standard most clubs of our position go for as well, and ultimately most are of the same standard. I always say most managers get lucky with signings, players who end up comfortable in a certain system with certain players and that's how clubs maybe good for a couple of seasons but can't keep it together as the manager had no idea how he did it in the first place. Glenn Whelan does not look anywhere like aIt would indicate he certainly would be out of place though.
We could put a team of players out our fans have deemed not good enough for us who have ended up playing for a side who finish higher.
Strengths. He works hard and can play a simple passHas anyone watched him in great detail? Strengths, weaknesses, how he could fit into our side and in whose place?
No, thought not.
So a player who has been good enough to play in a side that has finished above us for the last few seasons isn't actually good enough for us?
Perhaps he should change his name to something like Gyan Willian ey! That would pull the wool over the eyes of many (jordi Gomez anyone) .
I do know what they're saying and of course I'm being flippant it still surprises me however that our supporters seem to still believe we are above players like this when it's pretty much all we can expect. Certainly from the domestic market.I think you know what the gist of people's comments are though. He's an ok player in the same way that Rodwell, Bridcutt, Gomez, Colback, Cattermole, Larsson and Gardner are ok players. What we desperately need is something that elevates our CM above "Ok"........a Modric or a Lampard.......someone that's 50% better than what we have not roughly the same. It's the same for our striking options mind......ok players and linked to more ok players when what we need up front is a Bony or Benteke (fully fit Benteke)

Players you mentioned (bony, benteke) were pretty much unknowns when they were plucked by villa and Swansea. Our record At unearthing such players is pretty dismal really.
Until we sort out our scouting system the glen whelsns of this world are all we can expect I'm afraid.
Its what we have, we want better.I do know what they're saying and of course I'm being flippant it still surprises me however that our supporters seem to still believe we are above players like this when it's pretty much all we can expect. Certainly from the domestic market.

We thought we had with Rodwell. Doesn't always work out though. Its what we have, we want better.
Good point, lets not want to improve. We thought we had with Rodwell. Doesn't always work out though.
Bony and benteke ships have sailed I'm afraid. They'd be off to a top 6 club of they were to leave. We need to pluck an unknown out from nowhere or polish up a rough diamond.Yeah, i said much the same on another thread......we either have to up our scouting game or attempt to make occasional high profile signings. I'd be over the moon if we only made one signing this window and it was either Bony or Benteke.....£20m balanced by the sales of Altidore and Giaccherini.....hell, i'd even throw Fletcher in if it was a deal clincher.
We all want to improve but if you're building your hopes up on someone a lot better than Glem Whelan you're guna end up dissapointed I'm afraid.Good point, lets not want to improve.
I will be disappointed , correct. We all want to improve but if you're building your hopes up on someone a lot better than Glem Whelan you're guna end up dissapointed I'm afraid.
Because its bollocks.we've no need for a Glenn Whelan whatsoever, and the club won't even be looking at him. He's just another Cattermole (and not that much difference ability wise - which of course will not be agreed with...)
I will be disappointed , correct.
It won't be hard to get better than Glenn Whelan
Because its bollocks.
It won't be hard you say? We've certainly made it look that way over the last few year then.I will be disappointed , correct.

Glenn Whelan isn't bad - he is an identikit Sunderland midfielder of recent years. Closes down, harries, doesn't waste possession much but no creativity. We certainly don't need him.
Of course it is yes.... super Lee is a footballing god, how could I ever forget....
Peas in a pod man.
Majority of supporters outside of Stoke wouldn't rate Whelan too highly, and similarly, majority of supporters outside of Sunderland don't rate Cattermole too highly either. Wonder why.
No it won't. Past mistakes are irrelevant. It won't be hard you say? We've certainly made it look that way over the last few year then.
