Boss expecting you to stay back every night to clear work?

Yeah, but "comes with the job" is a shit justification really. Its bosses taking the piss.
I took the job knowing I'd have to regularly work late, it can be annoying buy doesn't bother me too much as I enjoy the work.

I leave when I finish our work, but with it being as said a very reactionary job something can happen at 10 to six and if it does it has to be sorted.

Depends on pay (salary or hourly pay)
Depends on working for free/or pay.
Depends on attitude of company - good company , you'd probably work for free, cos you'll get back in spades down the line. Rubbish company, nothing extra when you are on poor/low hourly pay - it isn't going to happen.

I'll drink owt after 28 days on the rig - you know that man!!!
I'd even drink Bud Light through a matted gusset if I had to.;)

We don't want to know about your rent boy days thanks very much!

I reckon teachers do this all the time. Work more hours.
.
Clamming for a bite ain't ya?

I know 2 teachers and both say its the easiest job in the world, and anyone who says otherwise is either shit at their job or a liar. Which one are you Marco? ;)

Teachers do the most over-time, without doubt.

The problem in most industries are the complete lack of qualified managers. Anyone gets the job by proving they are really good at a different job - its a total nonsense. In the modern world, most of us are paid by the hour, yet we have a culture of staying to get the work done. No. Either you pay me per hour, in which case I will leave on time, thankyouverymuch, *OR* you pay me per workload/project/deliverable. In which case, when the work is done, I'm out the door or not even coming in the next day.

Qualified manager.

Qualified?

Am ouy the door at half 4 most days. If I stay back an extra couple hours then I leave a couple hours early on friday
And that's the beauty of it, I don't pay overtime but do a couple of hours here and there and you get it back in early finishes, flexible with holidays and other time off when you can etc. I can't give money but I can give time.

Most contracts state ' maybe required to work different hours depending on business needs '
In my experience overtime / time in lieu could be available, depends how high up the corporate ladder you want to go though

Need a good work / life balance

I'm a teacher who is laughing at the irony of this thread

I charge £50 an hour. I'll work whenever a customer wants me to. I'm going in on Sunday for 2 hours. Wasn't going to but £100 was calling me!

If I was making money for someone else then fuck that. If the work can't be completed on time then that is an intrinsic failing of the management/evil bastard overlords and they need to employ more people rather than squeeze it out of the poor fuckers who toil for them, whilst hanging the constant threat of unemployment over them.

Indeed. Can't remember the last time I worked my contracted hours. It's just the job. I don't do "hours" I do "work" and if the work needs doing I have to do it.

That's not my boss saying that, it's just how it is. But I can understand people in other types of jobs might be different.

Whats the reasons you have to stop back in a bank for?

Do you work in a high street bank?

I do but not in the branch.

I think it just depends on the type of work. I get paid to deliver things, rather than to be in the office for a set amount of time. Mr B is in software, and he was working till 1am on Wednesday. He doesn't get overtime either. It's a cultural thing in certain industries or jobs I suppose.

Yes, you know, own a qualification in management. Letters after my name, the whole works.

There is a choice between academic qualifications (MBA, other masters etc) and professional qualifications (PRINCE2, etc etc).

Management of people is about behavioural traits... You can sit through all the qualifications you want but still won't have the ability to manage people if you don't have the personality and behaviours to do so (I'm not suggesting you don't).

The condescending tone of your first paragraph is typical of a poor manager ;)

From a "qualified manager".
