Is exhibition Park the only local Parkrun in the north east? Back in the area from Glasgow tomorrow morning and fancy trying to get myself a time for one, been ages since I did it and have been getting a good few miles under my belt recently.

Dont forget you have to register first and print off the bar code to take with you or you wont get a time.

8 miles last night, 10 miles this morning. Right now my legs will barely move but hoping for 6-7 miles tomorrow then 25 on Sunday.

Toughest training block ever for me.

3 PBs for me in the last few weeks; 10k in 39.40, 2 miles in 11.41 and half in 1.27.07. Hopefully will make 3rd of my 4 targets for 2014 with a sub-19 parkrun in morning.

Morning. My first post on the Running Thread and looking for some advice on moving to Ultra marathons (in which it seems a few on here are v experienced).

I've been running for about 6 years, starting as cross training for cycling. I'm training for the San Sebastian marathon at the end of Nov (my 6th marathon) and confident of a PB, going sub 3' 30". At a push I'm hoping for sub 3' 20" if my training goes really well and I stay injury free (I've had cartilage ops on both knees so need to be relatively cautious, although don't have too many problems running long distance).

I'm 50 and so probably not going to get a lot quicker and so it seems logical to move to longer distance as I already do long distance cycling (i.e. 200+ mile rides). My question is about the transition to Ultras. How gentle should I look to ease myself in? Did those of you who are doing Ultras build up slowly (e.g. something like a 35-40 miler, followed by a 50 miler etc)? What kind of time period did you take to build up?

Part of this is triggered by a mate in South Africa inviting me to go and do the Comrades which is 56 miles, in May next year. I'd love to do it but is that too much too soon? Any experiences that you've had would be helpful......

My first one next month and it will be 50k. Depending on how that goes I might then go to 50 miles or so. I don't think I'd be able to go from marathon to say 50 miles / 100k in one go.

if you are strong over the marathon then you can more than likely make the step up. I am training about 50 miles a week at the moment.

I entered a 45 miler before I'd even completed my first marathon. I did the 45 mile race in Jan 2012 and then did 100 mile in March 2013, prob could have done it sooner tbh. From my experience ultra running is mostly psychological anyway really. As long as you keep yourself fed and hydrated on the run it's ok. You don't feel twice as tired as doing a marathon doing 52 miles, either way you feel tired haha. As strange as it might sound I didn't struggle on the 100 until I got to 80 miles. You've clearly got a very good level of fitness so as long as you do the miles and do the training and get your nutrition right during training for the race you'll be fine. When I was training for the 100 I did training runs up to 30/35 miles.

Anyone at the xc relays in farra today? Bizarre running a xc on firm ground in blazing sunshine. Ran second leg, dint knaw who won as left early to get to the sol

i know what you mean about hitting 50 and slowly realising those fast times are never gonna come back to you so go long!

Thing is I'm proof that anyone can do it. I'm by no means an athlete and if you saw me I certainly don't look like I could run that sort of distance, 8 years ago I could brarly run a mile. I just persisted with it and pushed the training up slowly and then realised I could just keep on going. The only thing that I might advice for those that want to do ultra distance runs is to probably slow down a bit. This comes easy to me as I'm more a plodder anyway and know if you're someone who can go quick over marathon distance then you'll want to get a shift on but ultra running, bar the people who are gonna be winning the races is really just about covering the distance first and time second.

Done 340 miles this year but 250 of those were before the end of April. Need to get my arse into gear.
4 miles yesterday and 5k today. Slow as owt but better than staying in bed.
Parked up next to the bridge this morning and I think it was Aly Dixon who went past me going down the hill. She was going that fast I thought she was being chased.

I was out for 13 yesterday, felt fine when I was out but as soon as I got back I felt ill and don't feel too good today and think I've got a sore chest type bug. Was hoping to get my last long run in tomorrow before my Keilder taper kicks in but think I'll have to sack that off now rather than push myself and potentially feel worse for it. I'm not expecting any great time for Keilder but would feel confident of beating my 4:25 that I did 3 years ago.

20 miles done this morning. First 10 at 7:40 pace and second 10 at 7:00. Felt rotten before I'd started after a hard week training and not enough sleep, but was motoring along the second half.

55 miles for the week and 100 in the past two weeks. More than I've ever done by a street.
