Zak Johnson

Just let him sign for York on a free man. He's 21 and a billion miles away from our squad, and he's not going to have much value as a 21-year old on a 1-year contract. It's better for his career if we let him go, rather than keeping hold of him and trying to sell him for 50 quid.
be useful for the bench in europe

keep

Reading that article it makes financial sense to keep him (squad costs lower) or extend the contract then sell him - extra revenue.

For his own development its clearly better to go as he'll play virtually no football with us.

The interesting thing, that I didnt know was that if we are in Europe the squad costs can only be a max of 70% of revenue. Whereas PL rules allow up to 85%.

Counterintuitive really as playing in Europe will require a bigger/more experienced squad

It would be a shitty thing to do to give him a contract extension.

There's no chance of him getting game time here, and a team where he has done well are offering him the chance of a first team career in league football.

Keeping him as some sort of gamble that we would get more in a transfer fee than having to pay him on what would be very low wages, or that it will somehow help with financial headroom, while he is unable to pursue a meaningful career, is just all sorts of wrong IMO.

How's it shitty. The lad might back myself to get into the squad especially if we qualify for Europe.

It's not like he's a novice, he's got the best part of 100 senior appreances to his name

Because you know as well as I do that he's not going to get in the team. He'll be 22 by the time next season starts and the highest he has played is 10 games in League Two. From contracted players for next season, he has Ballard, Alderete, Mukiele, Hume, Reinildo, Seelt, O'Nien, Hjelde and Alese ahead of him. So he's something like our 10th choice defender.

Using a club option to extend his contract (which will be peanuts) to try and generate some cash (or PSR headroom) is not good for him at this stage of his career - it jeopardises a crucial year for him, it may stop him joining a club he wants to join, it reduces his choice and probably reduces his wages because he's not a free agent.

It would be a shitty thing to do.

Do you know the home grown rule for Europe? We have to register 4 proper HG players. If we don't we lose those places and another equivalent place. He would fill one of those places and could get a few games

I don't have a clue on our total revenue this season (guessing £200m?), but 75% of £30m to £40m prize money plus any cash from increased profile might make up the difference.

Totally get your point though. You would think the money bags teams would want the PL to mirror Europe, as they are the ones likely to be disadvantaged.
