Would a temporary move to a National League side (Gateshead, Hartlepool etc) be an option outside of the current transfer window? I remember that Patterson benefitted greatly from a loan move to Notts County a few seasons ago before returning to establish himself as a first team regular.

I think so, it's not like there's a massive gap between L2 and the NL anyway, just as long as he's playing games where the result matters.
