Wrestling - Part 3

I don’t know what to say about celebrities in wrestling. It can work. We think of celebrities we think of the headliners of the first WrestleManias. Mr T and Alice Cooper especially. Then the NFL v WWF Battle Royale. In the 90s it was Rodman v Tyson. Rodman was with the NWO in WCW and Tyson was part of the WWFs Austin v DX story. But also Laurence Taylor who fought Bam Bam Bigelow at WM XI. Which I actually liked. It was a good showing by Taylor against the experienced Bigelow. This resulted in Bam Bam being kicked out of the Million Dollar Corporation and turning face in the process.

It’s all in what you do with the star that matters.

Did Pat McAfee really come out and say Mania prices were too big and he was making the 25% cheaper until Monday?

What a way to announce that you can't shift tickets for what's been the biggest event in wrestling for 40 years 🤣🤣🤣🤣
He looks and sounds like a indie promoter playing the "bad dude" and then you've got Jelly Roll who looks like a deflated waterbed shoved into a pair of Wranglers playing the "aw shucks ma" part. No wonder people don't care. It's so f***ing embarrassing.

Aye but Mr T was battering Rocky, Lawrence Taylor was an actual hard as fuck sports star and Alice Cooper was a rock god who didn't actually wrestle and just walked Jake to the ring.

I know McAfee was a sports star but he's a midget for wrestling. The rest are YouTube dweebs or country bro singers. Get beat up of a 12 stone rapper is a bit different to an 18 stone athletic NFL Star.

You are correct, it's what you do with them but also who they are and what they project. WWE has completely lost it.

I am not talking about them actually wrestling. They don’t have to. Alice and other 80s celebrities in the WWF like Muhammad Ali and Cindy Lauper had appeal. They attracted the media attention. It got the WWF in the headlines and on mainstream TV. They bolstered ticket sales. The MTV generation put the WWF where it is now.

Aye but they are now and being shoehorned into things they don't need to be involved with which is why everyone is sick, so what's your point?

Another dreadful Smackdown. McAfee trying to be all cool by doing loads of swearing and then offering everyone reduced ticket prices to a show he had less than 5 minutes earlier told everyone not to bother attending

What made it worse was he only shit on night two saying it looked terrible AND THEN said night one was reduced with 25% off. Makes absolute sense all this

A few of the wrestlers (Rhodes, Priest, Flair) have spoken out publicly about how ridiculous this whole McAfee thing is, could be crossing the fourth wall to generate more interest but tbh, no one really cares about Damien Priest so can't see why they'd wheel him out to do that.

I think they genuinely think it's shite. It is really shite.

I agree. Wrestlers are quite protective of their "art", they don't look outsiders like McAfee and Belly Droll bypassing their way to important TV time. Hopefully someone leaves a receipt on one of these celebs along the way, particularly Speed who makes me want to be sick in my eye.
