I think it’s derived from backsheesh (Arabic?) meaning a tip or bribe i.e. something for nothing. Used in Africa and parts of Asia it could well have been adopted and modified by posted servicemen.
That's useful, where I work older people would talk about a buckshee half day if the sun was shining to go and play golf or go on the lash. I never knew where the phrase came from but knew it meant a bit sly or cheeky
