Someone can be in a high dudgeon, but never just in a dudgeon.

Someone else can be hoist with their own petard. A petard never occurs anywhere else but in the context of self-hoisting.

Very odd.

Incandescent with rage. Those light bulbs must be proper angry bastards.
A petard was an explosive device used to blow in gates etc. during sieges (e.g. during the English Civil War). To be hoist on your own petard is to be blown up by your own explosives - it's actually still quite apt when you know what it means.
Is that why you used the horse instead?
