Wolves, Brentford and Burnley

Looking at the teams it’s crazy, during the Roy Keane days we could be ambitious and have a great chance of staying up. We could potentially spend 160 million and still not have much of a chance.

thought the like of Wolves might be down the bottom but even Wolves are making some great buys. Burnley, Brentford, Leeds, West Ham and us in a dog fight?

just about that first season of staying up
Is huge. Hopefully we can do it.
It's a free-hit as far as i'm concerned but KLD has shown tremendous ambition. Hope it works out.

Finishing 17th would be enough, on our way to League winners in say, 2028 👍 😀

I was gonna slag off the OP and suggests he contacts Roker Report and asks to do a daily blog, but I won't so...

Am personally curious what Xhaka will do if/when we go down

He knows its a good chance. Is he banking on being the next Terry Butcher by Christmas

So two months on and I restate my case.
If we now don’t end up above these three I’ll be disappointed.
Thoughts?
I admire your enduring optimism. The Guardian's writers are now tipping Brentford for the drop, but 18th. I don't think Andrews will see out December, but would love to know what their fans reckon. Their message board needed a login, last I looked.

A good start is important. Three points against WHU would be great for us and bad for them. They may well be in the relegation mix with us this season, taking points from the likes of them is what we need.
It’s not going to be easy for us but it won’t be easy for another five or six clubs. That’s where we need to take points.

Of the 3 teams that went up i feel we will be the best - burnley have lost 2 of the players in the back 5 that had that defence = leeds cant play the way they did in the prem
if you look at how we played sheff utd - thatsd the blueprint - a low block - shut down space and when we attack - transition quickly and with pace
finishing any better than 18th however requires a huge step up - all the teams last season 17th plus had over 40 points

We've played Wolves and Burnley in friendlies. Beat one, drew with the other (dodgy late penalty). For as much as you can gather from Pre Season, I'd say you have got to be a seriously bad side to finish below either. Burnley are absolutely terrible. Wolves not much better.

You're a different beast compared to the starting first team you came up with.

We play you early on when we notoriously start the season shaky, I think Leeds and Burnley come much later in the first half of the season.

Come out firing and it'll make things interesting.

Don't give a shite who's in the bottom 3.

I just know it won't be us. 🙂
That's the spirit mate!

Just had a quick look to see what our squad was like when we last got promoted.

If it wasn't for Barry Bannon, the likes of Peter Ramage, Aaron Wilbraham, Owen Garvan & Jerome Thomas would have gone straight back down.

Many tip wolves to struggle. They do seem to weaken their squad every summer window which will eventually bite you. Cunha is a huge loss, seemed to bail them out a lot.

People are honestly underestimating how difficult next season is going to be.
To be honest the Sunderland squad is a box of chocolates no one really knows how good we will be we all have ideas but it’s 10th to 20th for me hopefully somewhere in the middle….

The left back they sold to city is a tremendous player…a huge loss
I’d be putting Everton, WHU and maybe Fulham into the mix as well.
They all have thin squads. If eg WHU lost Bowen to injury I don’t believe they offer any attacking threat

I asked tractor boy on a different thread what went wrong ( like you I thought Ipswich had on paper a good chance of staying up) - he said a weak midfield and leaky goalkeeper. They lost a lot of points after being in a winning position.

I’ve a feeling with Europe and Glasner’s traditional slow start, your lot might be looking shaky at new year. Too good of a coach to actually be in trouble though.

As things stand we are going to really struggle. Although I’m more then happy with the Arias signing (one of the best players at this summers CWC) we are seriously lacking in other areas.

It’s well known Fosun want the lowest wage bill possible with transfer fees no higher than £20m. Granted we have had plenty of success with this formula but these players are few and far between which results in us missing out on targets and leaving ourselves short come the end of the window.
