Nowhere near good enough for the prem

Certainly not yet. Some are getting very carried away by a decent return for a good side in a shit league.

He's young, so that obviously counts in his favour as he might (although not all players do) keep developing. Purely on stats though I found the following

16/17 league one season, James Vaughan 24 goals in 37 (one every 1.54 games)

18/19 league one season Josh Maja 14 goals in 22 games (one every 1.57 games)

So basically he's currently doing what James Vaughan has done, a player utterly useless in the Championship. Tin hat on, if I had to choose I'd probably take 16/17 Vaughan ahead of 18/19 Maja because, in addition to his similar (slightly better) goal ratio, he has more of an all round game.

This isn't meant to be critical of Maja, but some very average players have done what he's doing thus far. He's not doing so well in a shit league that we can predict premier league success! For me he's better staying here, playing, developing his game and seeing how far he can go. His choice obviously but if he goes I doubt he'll make an immediate impact on a higher league so getting regular football might not be easy

Couldn't agree more. I hope he does go on to be brilliant, I like seeing our academy graduates do well, but I will be surprised if he does.

I wouldn't have agreed and not sure I do. But a persuasive argument all the same.

Great post - nobody really knows how players adapt to the higher standard but in my opinion Maja probably wont cut it. His movement and instinctive finishing isn't enough there are tons of players that have performed well with those attributes at that level but not had the pace and physicality to do it at the top level. At this moment he's slightly less proven than a Matty Fryatt. I cant think of a similar type of player to Maja that is successful at the top level? that said he would be a big blow to lose this season.

Maja is a class above Vaughan and he's still only 20. You have to consider the manner of his goals and general movement. He's a talent.

But Maja is only 20 (and only just that too). I appreciate you acknowledge that but not many ‘average players have done what he’s done thus far’ at such a young age. Plus, despite our lofty league position, we’re not a team that creates a lot of chances so his conversion rate is also what stands him apart from many others at this level.

It’s his potential that the club will be so keen to retain and that will be what is attracting clubs at a higher level to him too. Obviously there’s no guarantees regarding how players will develop but I think the club and a lot of people can see enough in him to know that whilst it’s likely that we could fairly easily replace the player he is now, it may not be so easy for us to replace the player he could become.

I think that’s why some, including myself, are getting carried away about him. I’ll be upset if/when he leaves. It’s all part of being a fan though so I’m sure I’ll live and move on to getting excited about the next bright thing before the whole cycle starts again.

Maja reminds me of Yakubu. He was very decent in the premier league.

It really is impossible to tell how he'll progress, same with every young player. However I think he has the core skills already needed to be able to become a top player. Movement, touch and finishing. Obviously his pace won't improve dramatically but he isn't slow and is quick over a couple of yards. He isn't particularly small so he could really develop the physical side of his game and that normally comes with experience.

He has a huge opportunity to really make a very good career for himself.

If you think Vaughan is a better striker than Josh Maja then I suggest you take up watching a different sport because football is clearly not for you.

Adam Armstrong he may even have been younger. Hardly setting the world alight now as the step up is too much for him

Ha ha ha fuck off man, maja is absolutely nothing like yakubu apart from the obvious.

Yakubu was all about pace and power with a shit touch (a smaller lukaku really), maja doesn't have much pace or power but an excellent touch .
Yakubu wasn't quick at all, he was a goal scorer like Maja. Yes he is much stronger th am Maja but Maja is still a baby in footballer terms who can still developed that strength. I reckon there is much difference in their height as well, I bet Maja is pushing 6 foot.

So in short the ITK’s have told us he might leave, he might go to the Premier League, he might go to Everton, he might go to the championship, he’ll probably go somewhere south, he might stay here until the end of the season. Brilliant. I think he might be having pizza for tea, but he might be having pasta, or I could be totally wrong because I’m just guessing.

What did your mam cook for you in the end?
