wrong again, it was a genuine question. anyone who continues to repeat the same tired, baseless opinion as some sort of genuine insight obviously has a deeper issue than exchanging mere messageboard 'banter'. obviously you'll respond to this post with yet another fatuous tirade of supposed 'fact' so i shall offer some practical advice - don't bother - i won't be reading it./QUOTE]

I think that you may be confusing a consistency of opinion and argument with autism. I have never attempted to pass off my opinion as anything other than that - my opinion. It is the raison d'etre of message-boards to put forward one's opinion and challenge those of others with, hopefully, cogent argument. Still, I'm sure you know best ...[/

rocky was being facetious trav. ;)

Shit! I can't keep up with the bollocks on here half the time, especially pre-season. At least during the season it is just filled with half the board screaming for the manager to be sacked and the players to be shot and the other half saying that they will come good. I can sit happily watching the tennis style slanging matches in the knowledge that I accept being a Sunderland supporter for what it is, months of torment with a few moments of absolute unbridled joy. I thought that's why we all did it.

I'd like to see a picture of a Wijnaldum, a Van Dijk, a Clasie, a Lens or a Van Ginkel, or a similar standard of player wearing the shirt and holding a scarf aloft, alongside Advocaat, perhaps with the majestic trees of the AOL in the background. What evidence do you require ?
What if we've been after these players but weren't successful? How would you feel about that?

I did qualify the specific list with a '... or a similar standard of player' proviso. Oh, and it doesn't have to be the trees at the AOL in the background either, some of the pinkish seats at the SOL would be just as acceptable. And if Congerton wanted to get in on the photo alongside Advocaat, that would be OK as well.

I hope this helps

Aah right so the only evidence you want is them signing.

You've turned into a right radge packet of late there fella.

Genuinely can't work out who are wum's or just miserable knackers on here these days. This board is inundated with them

I'm going to sound old here but this place is certainly not what it was. Absolutley infested with WUMs, Mags and shitehawks. Heck, we've even got a Mag pretending to be Leicester fan AND paying to be a contributor to come on and do the wumming! No wonder the mods won't ban them, especially if they're chucking money in the coffers.

Tedious isn't it.

I'll keep reading PF over the summer but my post count will be minimal. It's f***ing daft at the minute.

This. Bit shit nowadays like.

The Sunderland board are wankers. Short is bleeding the club dry. We've no ambition. Why can't we just spend £300m to get us into Europe? Useless
Good post. Hear hear.

You missed off Byrne is a split arse and doesn't know what she's doing and Congers sits in his office playing solitaire all day, though but.

It does seem rather incontrovertible, doesn't it ? Indeed, the only evidence there can be of anyone signing is them actually signing. It is in the nature of it being evidence.

I would respectfully point out that the players that I listed are not an exclusive or exhaustive list, but rather indicative examples of the level of quality that I believe is required. However, I am sure there are many top quality players who could contribute to SAFC making the step change necessary to represent significant improvement. Players whose reputation for being top quality goes before then and whose star is on the rise or in the ascendancy, rather than on the wane. Players whose best days are with them and before them, rather than behind them. Players who have something about them, who can make things happen and have those of us watching sit up and take notice ,rather than have us muttering "Well I suppose we need eleven on the pitch - he'll at least make up the numbers". I would be happy to see any such players wielding the scarf after signing

However If you meant what indication of SAFC attempting to sign some/any players would I be happy with. then the answer is an unequivocal 'none'. I am not prepared to jump for joy at an unsubstantiated internet rumour, which then gains traction by virtue of the number of times it is repeated and reported. Frankly, I'm sick of SAFC promising big and delivering small. As fans, we should be demanding the best and most effective players realistically available, rather than rejoicing over any middling journeyman, if only on the grounds of the associated resources efficiency.

Incidentally, what evidence of high quality players signing are you prepared to accept ?

Please accept my apologies. It was never my intention to be so.

However, I just despair at the forelock tugging, 'we are not worthy', 'ever so 'umble' willingness of many on here to meekly accept and, worse, justify, why SAFC should not be expected to challenge and compete for the services of high quality players and to frequently succeed in those challenges. The grasping at straws (for example, "We are getting our squad level players in first and then we'll bring in the big ones) just boils my piss.

Would the receipt of my first ever 'smiley face' be of any comfort ?

To be fair fella you were positively giddy at the thought of Sam byram and incredulous if anyone doubted the merits of him. We've turned to a player who has similar attributes, is a similar age and has a similar pedigree (in actual fact a better one). We've also bought him for a quarter of the price. Yet Matthews is a journeyman? Are you really that bothered about quality or is it more about displays of wealth?

All that waffle and still no further forward.

It is about quality and not about displays of wealth. We have resorted to Wales' second best right back, their best being Chris Gunter of Nottingham Forest. Matthews appears to have played about 780 minutes of international football (the approximate equivalent of not quite nine full games) in four seasons.

I predict that Byram will prove to be the far better player, who would have justified the additional expense
