Even in that first season he broke his metatarsal and missed half of the season. He was injured most of the time and milked so much money from them in those four years. Fell out with Shearer and it ended in relegation. He has to be Sunderland's greatest Newcastle player.

He had 10 or 11 goals iirc before the inury at new year. Him and shearer had a decent link up. Then shearer retired and martins came in. After the world cup injury owen missed almost entire 06/07.

He didn't choose to miss 18 months, i won't hold injury against him. When he played he wasn't bad despite his heart not in it.
Only time i felt his performance was in question was the relegation season. That's when he was just tossing it off.

The season we needed our top earning, star player. Twat. I wonder if he carried that abject laziness to Man Utd & SAF?

He wasn't the sole reason for relegation that season. I really do dislike Owen, but it's not just about his time at nufc. That was the seed of it, but its grown massively since then. He's just a remarkably dislikeable bloke. A misguided arrogance about himself. A lack of personality. A lack of ownership over his mistakes. A lack of self awareness. He's a weapons grade ****.
But as i say, 05/06 and 07/08 at nufc he was an ok player

I went to most of the games at that time. He was a disgrace that season. Yes he wasn't alone in performing badly. We were, after all, relegated. He stood out as being the least interested and appeared to be offering the least effort.
I may be wrong. I often am. In this instance I doubt it though.

I agree entirely. Do you remember Fulham at home towards the end when it pissed down after the game, think viduka had a goal disallowed. That's when i knew we were done. But aye that final season he was a joke.
As i said, not disputing his final season. But i think he done ok under KK and his first half season under Souness.

He was a proper character. Didn't give a fuck. Great player as well.
