Well done FIFA

That was the first thing I remembered from that world cup, then the penalty shoot out in what must go down as one of the worst finals ever. Mind Bergkamp did score a lovely goal against Argentina to knock them out.

The setting of the Rose Bowl was great though - but they won't play there due to more luxury boxes at the new stadium in LA.

Chicago rightfully refused FIFAs insane tax demands, so another amazing venue / host city is out.

Also - no idea why they didn't take the easy layup of having a few matches in Vegas. An England - Mexico type QF in Vegas would be absolute madness.

Bergkamp v Argentina was '98. Romania knocked them out in '94 after Diego was sent home.

Loved '94 myself but it's the first world cup I remember and Ireland were there. Final was brutal right enough

Was it France 98 that goal, well yi bugger. One in the eye there for 94 then, I also remember the Nigerian team and the big centre forward they had Yikini and Amocahi that Everton signed.

England v Mexico will be at the Azteca in the last 16 if both win their groups. The only decent game England can play at this farce of a tournament.

I thought 94 in the US was pretty crap too

Nah I can't agree with that. Off the top of my head:

Stoitchkov and Letchkov putting the Germans out, Sweden and Kennet Anderson, Amokachi's Nigeria, Lalas, Houghton v Italy, Salenko hitting 5, Said Al Owaairan running the length of the pitch for goal of the tournament v Belgium, Bergkamp, Romario, Bebeto, the free kick goals from Branco and Wynalda, Georgi Hagi and the Romanian side, Argentina v Holland, Brazil v Holland....

If only it would be anything like that Id be very happy. It won't be though.

You are totally entitled to your opinion but I think you're wrong :D

Fair enough. Then final was dreadful tbf. But there was loads of good stuff too as I mentioned and as a 14 year old I really enjoyed it.
I was 16 and had just discovered Guinness Enigma and going out on the town and thought it was a little meh of a tournament. Another memory is of Aldridge going nuts on the sideline trying to get on against Mexico. The final is up there for the owrst ever for my money.

Yes it was. Sweden v Bulgaria in the 3rd place play off is mental when you think about it. A bit like Turkey v South Korea in 2002.

There were some real underdog stories at USA 94 and I hope we get some of those this time to make it a bit more watchable. Haiti and Congo could surprise a few maybe. Still a shitshow of a tournament mind.

The Bulgarians were canny too during that tournament, I think the final and Diana Ross are clouding my judgement of the whole thing.

It still rankles with me that the US are getting it for the second time in my life while we have never hosted it since I was born. The US don't even really like football.

 vile ***** man, $10 a bottle too no doubt

THIS is an ABSOLUTE DISGRACE.

To be honest, the whole thing sickens me. Right from the ‘peace bribe’ that trump got from the infant through the ridiculous amount of games in the USA in comparison to Canada and Mexico….to the match ticket/hotel/transport prices.
Nothing much that can be done about the time zone problems for us watching in Europe….that is just how it goes.
But the other shit is FIFA/USA/man-made greed.

I love the World Cup. I am old enough to have attended a match in ‘66 (USSR v Italy at Roker Park) and have loved “the global festival of football” every four years since.

But….I have just thought.
I don’t even know off the top of my head, just who England’s opponents are in the Group stage.

That sums up my apathy towards it.

It is a farce.

Will I watch it?…of course. It’s football. I love football.
Even Saudi Arabia v Cabo Verde would normally pique my interest if it was at a ‘watchable’ time.
Will I watch many live? Fuck no. Even for interesting games like Scotland v Brazil (23:00 uk time) or Uruguay v Spain (01:00 UK time)
So it is highlights for me if the games are at stupid o’clock here in the U.K.

Money on Spain at 11/2….VAMOS!!

Regarding the kick off times I am sure they were on decent times in the UK for the 94 World Cup

The difference is there are far more games so are spread out more. I dont think there were many evening kick offs in 94 meaning the UK times were better. When you have 6 games a day however, you have to spread them out, and so there are loads of night games.
