Always had more affection to Sheff Utd mostly because of the red and white colours, but I know some top people who are Wednesday fans.

In the city of Sheffield the support is surprisingly 50/50.This is because neither Sheffield team has been able to dominate for too long, it's always alternated in 10 to 15 year cycles.
Whereas in South Yorkshire Wednesday are traditionally seen as more glamorous so have more support in Barnsley, Doncaster, Rotherham etc resulting in them being more disliked by Barnsley, Rotherham, Doncaster fans. Both have a similar hardcore support but Sheff Wednesday have always had more woodwork supporters who only turn up for the big matches.

There's a slight pattern of more SW fans near their stadium in the north of Sheffield, where SU have more fans in South Sheffield but both fans are very mixed everywhere in Sheffield. You often find families, brother/ sister, husbands/ wives supporting Utd with the other supporting Wednesday.
Basically everyone seem to have family or friends who support United or Wednesday.

So derby matches are very passionate, almost too tense, sadly there's plenty of intimidation towards away fans wearing shirts.
Also the records of both teams are very similar. United have won slightly more in head to heads but I believe there's only about 3 wins in it.
Also seasons spent in the top flight, 2nd tier and 3rd tier are again surprisingly similar, Wednesday slightly edge it, so there's always local bragging rights at stake.

Regards stereotypes attitudes are often based on history.

Sheff Wed were challenging near the top of the table (div 1) in the early 60's, mid 80's and early 90's.
Therefore many Wednesday fans (a bit like Forest this season) have an inner confidence that promotion back to the PL is only a matter of time
and when they get their they'll expect to spend big and challenge in the top 10.

So SW fans are traditionally more confident, verging on arrogant. Due to not being in the PL for 22 years their (understandably) constantly talk about their fantastic early 90's team
and tell each other how big (massive) they are and often mock other clubs support/ stadia/ history etc.
Wednesday have a more loyal accepting fanbase, almost like a happy clapper cult and have historically always had an excellent away support.

United fans are traditionally more angry/ bitter, very passionate but have more of an underdog syndrome with chips on their shoulders.
However Sheff United are more down to earth and able to take the Micky out of their own club.
Whereas Wednesday fans take their clubs image very very seriously.

Sheff Utd have a history of doing well, regularly involved in promotions battles, have fairly good cup runs but we always fail at the final hurdle.
We haven't won anything since 1925 and not even been in a cup final since 1936, so it's almost written in our DNA that we'll see glorious failure.
In the 70's some of the old'uns used to the say to me "Sheffield United, always the bridesmaid never the bride"...kind of sums it up.
United fans are more fickle, great support when doing well but it can drop off (especially away) when struggling or lacking ambition.

Another difference is that some United fans seem more bothered about seeing SW lose than see their own team win.
Sheff United fans seem to see the Sheffield Derby as the more important where as Sheff Wed fans see the bigger picture of trying to get back in the PL and compete for honours.

One of the issues that causes both Sheffield teams to struggle and that there's a lot of infighting with both fanbases try to sabotage the efforts of both clubs.
So you find Sheff Wed fans pretending to be Sheff Utd's fan ringing up radio station asking for fans to stay away and hoping the manager to be sacked and vice versa.
Also on forums and social media you see much more negative stuff than positive. Again fans pretend they support their club but constantly slagging them off.

So there's plenty of social media negatively around both clubs trying to predict eternal failure.
In fact living in the past, being small minded and negativity all seem to be traditional Sheffield traits.

Hard to argue with that to be fair.

Wednesday have always taken way more to Sunderland than Blades.
Even when away travel wasn't anything like it is now (late 60s,early 70s), they still brought hundreds up. One season we played them in the league and the following week iirc in the cup. Had around 1000 for the league game and double that for the cup. They also tried to get in to the FE in cup game and were chased back down to the RE.
Don't even think Blades sold full allocation for PO SF 98 !!

Evening all. Babysitting tonight so will keep it brief.

I follow the owls because my dad took me as a nipper even though we lived 1 mile from the stain. My brother however is more Utd, but he knows nothing about footy and smells.
Most of my pals are blades so as long as we are not in the same league I have no issue with them doing well.

To be honest that's because Sunderland are a well respected club who have similarities to the Sheffield clubs.
Your fans have suffered for decades and have kind of been ignored by the national media who when it comes to the North East, are constantly Newcastle biased.
So we do have a shared respect and empathy.

It's surprisingly common.

I'm a Sheff United season ticket holder, my brother is a Sheff Wednesday season ticket holder.
We both supported the team that was doing the best when were at school.

I was at school in the mid- late 70's when Sheff Wed were crap in div 3 and most kids at my school supported the more glamorous Sheff Utd.
My bother was at school in the mid 80's when Sheff Wed returned to the top flight and loads at his school declared they were SW fans, so it was a no brainer for him.

actually I'll give you that...Blades fans won't accept the crap Wednesday fans will.....and thats not slating Blades fans, cos they have had some reight crap to put up with...Their Chairman once had to come to the ground in disguise!!...as they dropped to the 4th division...I give 'em credit for that..Cos some of our fans stood through fans being sued over comments online.
Instead of doing what blades fans did...tipping up in the car park and taking their shoes off and stuff..Wednesday organised a "Black Balloon protest"
IOt was then deemed "Dangerous" to bring a "Black Balloon into Hillsborough" by order of The Chairman...funnily enough..you could still bring a "Blue" balloon in

I have carried out an experiment on my 5 yr old son
I hit him 50 times over the head with a black Balloon and the following day...50 times over the head with a blue balloon ..I have found there is no noticeable difference..Can I bring a black ballon this saturday?"

Can agree with that...South Sheffield had huge estates built to the South East that people all over the city moved to so no surprise supporters of both live there. I knew Blades from Ecclesfield, Penistone, Stocksbridge and Hillsborough, all of which would be seen as Wednesday territory. Places like Handsworth, Aston and Woodseats are much more red than blue.

I remember a few years back when there was riots in the UK, it started in London, think it was summat to do with that Mark Duggan shooting. Every major city In the UK had riots apart from Cardiff and Sheffield. Made me quite proud.

Nowt wrong with Dave Allen. He's kept my mrs and brother inlaw in employment for the past 30 yrs. Irrc he kept your lot afloat with the money he invested in the club and got nothing back in return, got more thought about when he upsticks and went to Chesterfield.
