Wear-Tees Derby

Another boro thread.

Some people see it as a derby, some don't. It is the same for Boro fans. A lot of Boro fans would shrug their shoulders about Sunderland, especially these days.

Social media has meant a lot of our younger fans would get more bothered about us playing Derby County or even Burnley.

Is there see still a organised hooligan element within a section of your fan base? Is the frontline active in any way?

I totally understand why you guys don’t regard it as a true “Derby” - football is territorial really and there’s very few Boro fans further North. However from our point of view there’s a lot of Sunderland around our area I.e Billingham, Stockton etc (South County Durham) - also Newcastle fans.

Go south of Boro and it’s Leeds/Boro throughout North Yorkshire.

The whole county thing is odd - Newcastle & Sunderland historically have never shared a county until this made up Tyne & Wear rubbish haha.

You will not find a Teessider under 50 consider themselves as a Yorkshireman or anything to do with Yorkshire - it’s a generation thing.

I found Boro vs Sunderland had a great atmosphere and a real edge to it before Boro went down 2009 since then it’s been really diluted social media age and you guys having the upper hand against the mags probably the reason for that imo.
Guys ffs!

Sheff United definitely didn't think of you as Yorkshire rivals

Having lived in Sunderland for 30 years plus, I just about think of you as the North East as you share the same regional TV and local NHS system etc. but your links to the Yorkshire coast and the north eastern bit of North Yorkshire separate you from Tyne and Wear.

The Boro fans I know are ok and your fans have come across well when interviewed about Warnock's sacking, and you don't invoke the same hatred as the Blood money grabbers up the road.

Your Ultras impression of the Human League is irritating though.

Hate the fixture.
They tend to be more up for it than us and usually do better.

I was in the Holgate end when Slaven scored within about 16 seconds, right in front of me. My memory from those days is that generally we struggled against them. I was in the away end for the 2-2 around 1994 and it was a cracking atmosphere - the impression I got from those in our end was that it was more than just another match.
Certainly not the first fixture I'll be looking for. It anything Boro always have an advantage going into these games as it seems to mean more to their fans.

'Probably to their older fans, who went to matches in the '70s and early '80s, but I think their younger fans see Newcastle as the big game.

What ? Like teams from Durham and Northumberland you mean ?
I live in Easington and work in Sunderland. Trouble is no one knows any Boro fans to have a rivalry with. Unfortunately I know a shed load of Mags !! Seems to me people from Middlesbrough just want some team to hate maybe cos they feel left out. The games with Boro do have a better atmosphere than regular games. That said I’d rather beat Leeds.

Can't be much fun when your natural rivals are Hartlepool and Darlo.

Not too sure tbh - I go to a lot of away matches and the only thing I have seen in recent memory was some handy looking older Boro lads (as in not daft teenagers) having a scrap with equally handy looking Rotherham fans after a game a few years ago - last of the season, Pulis last game I think.

The rest are just kids giving wanker signs from what I can see.

Talking to my dad he always said Middlesbrough is a Regional derby....and just dosent compare to the SunderlandvNewcastle who's 10miles apart

And if you support boro both Hartlepool a darlo are as much use as an "ashtray on a motorbike"for a regular fixture so that's why I think theres so much hatred towards Sunderland coz theres no one else. Imagine supporting Carlisle...I think Barrow are there new rivals sum 70miles away.!!!!
