Watching Cricket on the Radio

Book written by a chap who listens religiously to the BBC’s county cricket coverage. He’s a regular tweeter to Marty on Durham games and the concept of the book atleast sounds hilarious.

The BBC’s service of course is phenomenal and fills a huge void for so many of us who can’t get to as many county cricket games as we’d like to.

Been reading quite a lot these last few weeks and realised that one has so far evaded me so I’ve bought a copy and will hopefully read through it in the next few weeks.

Not sure what the exact concept will be of course but I’ve spent a bit of time lately reminiscing with a couple of friends about the early days of Durham and of my junior membership days. Recently (finally) got round to reading Five Trophies and a Funeral so am having a real walk down memory lane. If I was proposing a book on my experiences from that time I’d plagiarise Dan’s title a touch and call mine ‘Watching Cricket on Teletext’

Remember sitting in my bedroom during the summer holidays staring at Durham scorecards waiting for any changes. Yes, I know I’m sad

I recall in the 1992 season ringing the County Championship score update line on numerous occasions while at work which I seem to remember was a premium rate set up.(Luckily back then the company I worked for didn't give a shiney shite about such things ).

On the subject of Teletext it always seemed back in the old days of the Sunday League that if the game went down to the last few balls the screen wouldn't update for about 10 mins until the inevitable news of a Durham defeat appeared.

I remember it through much rosier a tint of glasses to you TRT, my first Junior Membership was in 1998 and even though we were still wooden spoon candidates in the Championship we enjoyed a decent period in the Sunday League.

Remember Killer (and even Danny Law :o) bowling us to a few tight wins around that time and one such game with the bat - where I’m sure we needed summit a bit mental like 14 off an over and in the scenario you allude to the page refreshed with Killeen having added 16 to his score in 3 balls and we’d won easy :o

Been after that five trophies and a funeral for a while. Not managed to pick it up yet.

Love listening to cricket on the radio. Just a great sport to listen to as the crack between presenters is usually canny. Also they mostly talk about any old shite other than actual cricket

That’s right, I remember looking at it and we lost our last 5 wickets in 3 overs.

Particularly in 1992 I honestly thought we’d storm the championship, Botham, Graveney, Jones, Bainbridge, Larkins etc I was young and naive!

I was too young to remember it but I’ve read a few books now that document that first season. I think given the names we managed to attract, you won’t have been alone in thinking we’d do well :o

1992 was one of my favourite seasons simply because it was almost indescribable to be actually watching Durham playing First Class Cricket.
We fell away badly in the Championship but the Sunday League matches played at packed outgrounds were superb.

Then again, when you look at how strong each county side were at the time, all with current and ex-internationals, maybe expectations of the county championship campaign could've been reined in a little. Anything goes in the one-dayers though so I was expecting Durham to have a decent cup run.
