VARguments

Refs shouldn’t be at the controls.

I read that the words good goal, no goal, offside, foul, handball etc aren’t used in the exchanges. Surely that’s not true? “Check complete” or “have a look” etc can’t be what the ref hears surely?
Right person for the right job, putting some pitch refs at the controls is like giving your grandad the TV remote.

There was a clamour for intervention after fans complained refs decisions favoured the big clubs. Now people are not only saying go back to no reviews but also to suspend anyone who complains about decisions
i'm happy in my smuggness knowing that i never clamoured for it

Hated the idea of VAR, hated it since it came in, still hate it now.

My main issue is that it further adds to the stop-start nature of the modern game and kills off the momentum and excitement. I also don't follow a big club so a decision going 'wrong' usually doesn't mean much in the grand scheme of things

You can be even more smug as you didn't appear to be one of those crazily suggesting complaining about bad decisions should result in a suspension.

i do think something needs doing about that though, the only reason being that i go to watch my neices u14 games sometimes and the stick the refs get is absurd. the refs are usually teenagers, and the parents and coaches are screaming abuse at them constantly. it clearly comes watching the likes of Klipperty on the tele

I'm pretty sure (in fact i know) refs were copping for it from berk parents long before Sky TV etc.

The champions league use automated offsides don't they? I think they're going to roll it out to all UEFA competitions. If the Champions league can automate it why can't we use that technology in the premier League?

Get rid of VAR ... get the linesman to put their flag up straight away too... flagging an offside at the end of a play not when they see the offside is pointless...

It's done so that if the linesman thinks someone is offsdie when they aren't (as Diaz really was yesterday), the attacking team isn't effectively penalised by the incorrect call. If he'd flagged early, it would still have been a wrong decision.
