VAR

if it helps the referee i am all for it, worked a treat last summer in the world cup, Who forget South Korea knocking the Germans out 🤣 VAR at club level is just the future simple enough.

Let’s not forget the German league and the Italian league have had this for a good while now and have a lot more experience with it then we do, and both sets of supports unanimously think it’s destroying their national games.

In those circumstances if it hit the defenders hand to deflect away from a potential goal scorer is it a penalty?
Yep. Accidental or not, if the ball hits the hand/arm it's a foul under the new rule. VAR was spot on in this case - it's the rule that should be up for debate

That’s just plainly not true. The new rule is only if the handball leads to a goal, as in today’s case. The rule is different for defending teams, and is a reworded version of the old rule needing a deliberate handball or accidental with an unnatural position. Simple reality is that you could have a situation where the ball hits a defenders hand, deflects onto an attackers hand, both accidentally, then down to someone who scores and the goal would be disallowed and only the second handball penalised but not the first

It will take time to iron out the knicks in it, i sure other sports like cricket for example said similar when hawkeye was introduced.

No. Which is why the rule is so poor. Can’t have a different rule for different players based on location and consequence

The Germans have had it two years already. Likewise the Italians. Both despise it. Cricket is different as there are natural breaks of play and the decisions made are factual, such as lbw and whether it hit the bat, whereas football is subjective.

Well we will see, i think it will take as long as it takes for people to get used to it, like Marmite, people will love it or hate it.

HANDLING THE BALL

It is an offence if a player:
  • deliberately touches the ball with their hand/arm, including moving the hand/arm towards the ball
  • gains possession/control of the ball after it has touched their hand/arm and then:
    • scores in the opponents’ goal
    • creates a goal-scoring opportunity
  • scores in the opponents’ goal directly from their hand/arm, even if accidental, including by the goalkeeper
It is usually an offence if a player:
  • touches the ball with their hand/arm when:
    • the hand/arm has made their body unnaturally bigger
    • the hand/arm is above/beyond their shoulder level (unless the player deliberately plays the ball which then touches their hand/arm)
The above offences apply even if the ball touches a player’s hand/arm directly from the head or body (including the foot) of another player who is close.

Except for the above offences, it is not usually an offence if the ball touches a player’s hand/arm:
  • directly from the player’s own head or body (including the foot)
  • directly from the head or body (including the foot) of another player who is close
  • if the hand/arm is close to the body and does not make the body unnaturally bigger
  • when a player falls and the hand/arm is between the body and the ground to support the body, but not extended laterally or vertically away from the body
Direct from the FA at: Law 12 - Fouls and Misconduct

It really is poorly written. “It is usually an offence when...”

Load of shit today. Understand why they introduced the rule about VAR and handball but it’s shite. That Deondonker (Wolves) goal shouldn’t have been disallowed last week.

'unnaturally' is just another way of saying intentionally tbh. The new rule is idiotic, unfortunately.

I agree, hence it’s fundamentally unchanged apart from during the act of scoring a goal when it’s always an offence for some reason.

Laws in a game should be independent of consequence and location on the pitch (goalkeeper notwithstanding), so how you can have a different rule for an attacker and defender I don’t know. What’s next, offsides in even numbered minutes don’t count?

Sorry if seb but under this crazy rule we could see the ball hitting the arm of the defender and being knocked on to the attackers arm and only the attacker will get penalised.
How is that fair?
