VAR has ruined top level football.

VAR as a whole isn’t the best, but an offside is offside. It’s the dodgy handballs that VAR give and the yellows overturned to red that’s shit. Offside is offside whether by a midge’s dick or 3 yards.

It and the obsession with money to the point where clubs are fucked are quickly turning me away from the game. Not a fan of where it’s heading one bit.

Level as to whatever degree VAR is capable of declaring, I’m not arguing I’m asking a question.

There's already a 5cm tolerance with the thickness of the lines. That's a pretty small margin but even then, if you make the margin bigger you can still be offside by a fingernail however you define it. I'm not sure how else you can remedy the situation.

From ESPN..

'It's based solely on the relative positions of two players in an individual situation. Even with the 5cm tolerance level, there will still be offside situations that fall right on the border. There will always be a point at which onside has to become offside. It's inescapable.'

Having said that I don't think the offside in the game today was' that' close and with linos naturally being cautious you can bet your bottom dollar that without VAR his flag is going up.

You mustn't have seen the right one one. It showed he was off. They don't give offside if they are level.

It looks closer with the lines because the 2 lines are made thicker than a thin line to give the attacker a slight benefit of doubt plus it's being viewed on a TV screen making it closer again. It only looks close only because it's a gap of a few pixels but the gap will be between the 2 lines. If you were stood there on the pitch looking across it would be a clear offside, it's just the fact the Coventry player is further away and it tricks the eye. I explained all this crap ages ago and it's why I don't get bothered about offsides as it's pointless yet some still say it's level or a toenail when it's not really.

Look down where the linesman is and you can see how thick the 2 lines are in relation to the linesman as they're clearly a few inches each in reality as together they're the width of this calf. The blue line starts at Bassaka's toe going towards the goal adding inches 'advantage' on and the red line comes back away from the goal partially covering the Coventry player's boot. Even with the thicker lines, the 2 won't have overlapped even if they look close due to the shitty image as the computer VAR use knows this.

Draw a simple thin line halfway between the grass lines without the advantage of the thicker lines and it gives you a different viewing perspective. The red and blue VAR lines would be between Bassaka's toenail and left of the thin blue line below. I've added a bit of the VAR lines below to show it. The thick blue line is Bassaka's line and adds a little more forward towards Hadji. The thick red line is Haji's and comes back slightly towards Bassaka due to the thickness. If the 2 line edges manage to overlap by just 1 pixel then it's given onside as that is the advantage of the thicker lines. It just looks closer due to the shitty quality (this is done on purpose) small image they hoy up.

Someone has done similar to what I did above. It was offside by a few inches which is shite but it was the correct decision.

Its interesting , it looks level but if you go down to pixels its off side, but look at the player kicking the ball, has the ball left the foot of the player, is that the moment the ball was kicked to draw the line? It was noted by someone on the thread the picture is on that a milli second later and the man u player would be playing him on side, so is that the right frame to draw the lines on?

Linesman are told to not make calls now, just in case, so we will never know if the linesman would have flagged up, mind I think it was a harsh pen.

its very subjective still and a lot depends on when the action is frozen for the lines to be drawn.

Good post mate. He's actually well off.

If VAR is here to stay, let’s just abolish offside altogether. Let’s have loads more goals, open it up, let it be a free for all so we can at least celebrate goals without the inevitable technical offside kerplunk computer coming out.

And while we’re at it, just say if it hits any part of the arm at all it’s a foul irrespective of unnatural body shapes and what have you.

They need to look at what the offside law was brought in for - presumably to stop goal-hanging.
Nobody’s going to do that so imo it needs a rethink. The obvious solution being the opposite way round so as long as the attacker has one part of his body equal to the last defender he is ok.

Literally the only way to stop fans moaning about handballs and coming out with sh*t like 'no one knows the rules anymore'. It's pathetic that we will end up having to implement sh*te rules like the one you are suggesting to appease the childish football public.

Yes it's an image off Twitter I've hoyed lines on that's a frame later. The ball has moved slightly but not the feet of the players so 'offside' points still in same position. If anything, it's Bissaka who would have moved more (his shoulder) as Coventry player is more static. I just didn't say as my post was already an essay!

Just abolish offside. It’ll be great. It’ll make the top coaches have to rethink their entire way of playing. Be hellish
