Can't see Houghton having a team
Houghton dont have any junior teams ATM as far as I'm aware so I'm assuming that they are in the process of setting them up?

Proper shit draw for Brandon. Going to be a nightmare for parents to get their kids across the NE to play away at places like Houghton, Sunderland, Washington, etc. I mean fuck me, who thinks of this shit?? The South West division is basically the County League lineup, which they've been in for the last 20 odd year.
Washington's just along the road. No different to Brandon going to CLS! Washington's ground is literally 1 mile from Ropery Lane.

Houghton had junior teams last year in the coast league didn't they??

Cant see them here:

The only Houghton that I can see affiliated to the DCB is on this list:

Houghton CW has a site here - - and only have senior teams; no juniors.

I'll give you Sunderland will be bad, but the rest are no worse than Evenwood. In fact probably quicker to get to than Evenwood.

Brandon has moved on, they are not playing County League cricket any more and as such need their kids playing a higher standard.

Trust me, the travels not that bad.

Do you know if Houghton has any junior teams? Seems to be a moot point.

BTW any idea how Brandon's junior teams did last year? People are assuming that they are of a good standard. Will say the U11's be up there with say CLS, Washington and Hetton Lyons?

From the coast league link you put up

11-a-side cricket at u11 is set up so that everyone is involved - batsmen have to retire at 20 (and the most able players get these quite sharpish) so teams generally use AT LEAST 8-9 batsmen in an innings. Similarly, a team must use at least 8 bowlers (4 can bowl 3 overs each, then a maximum of 2 per bowler). In reality, most clubs (including ours) have a wicket keeper and then the other 10 players bowl 2 overs each.

The huge difference is that pairs cricket is so detached from 11-a-side that it's practically a different game. The 11-a-side version gets kids used to bowling and fielding a proper cricket ball; and batsmen sharp learn how to value their wicket. In pairs if a batsmen has a swipe and is bowled, their team loses a few runs but they then just pick their stumps up and continue batting.

For those sides that have been playing proper u11 cricket for a number of years now; this is a massive step backwards.
Have a look at this game at U11 level - Washington v Ryhope.

8 Washington lads batted, 4 of them faced less than 7 balls. 3 lads hogged the strike to try and make their retired target.

Then when Ryhope batted 4 of them got 5 balls or less and walked. 1 lad hogged the strike for 38 balls to make 9.

Pairs cricket means that each pair at that level will now face 30 balls between them ie far more cricket.

From the coast league link you put up
Under 15's, I was also looking for a Houghton U13 and U11 team but they dont appear to have one.

Dawdon v Washington - non pairs cricket:

5 Dawdon lads got ducks and walked.

7 of the Washington lads never got a bat.

Pointless.

Washington v Ryhope

6 of the Washington lads never batted

3 of the Ryhope lads never batted

If I was a parent of those lads I'd be very pissed off. They will now take far more interest when their lads bat for 5 overs - guaranteed. Far more batting time, far more chance of getting better and far more chance of them continuing to have an interest.

Washington v Murton:

6 of the Washington lads never got a bat

5 of the Murton lads never got a bat

Basically one whole team every game on average is not batting.

Houghton had a u15 team last year but they won't be having any junior teams next year unless they have a change of heart and manage to recruit some younguns

So basically that league is down to 10 teams and just 9 matches.

Under 15 and 18 tend to be top two in recent years not sure about other junior teams

should try getting from blackhall to richmond or barnard castle on a friday night:lol:

pairs cricket works really well in the nysd under 11 league. very competitive and it really does make the lads value their wicket. my son plays under 13 and only batted twice this season gone. it was a total waste and i felt heartly sorry for him

Good thing in my view overall.

Means people keep an interest. Valuing wicket is fine, but in any case many pro's need to be able to throw away their wicket for the good of the team.

That's not the important point. Those who dominate currently with still be the biggest factor in winning/losing, but others will also have a significant part in the game. Those that are any good at U11 will play U13 surely anyway and be able to play full side cricket.

A good thing -- but poeple often just resist change for the sake / familiarity of it.

A mate of mine knows someone at Houghton CW CC. He's trying to find out what the situation is with them junior cricket wise. I'm also still not sure what is going on at Philadelphia. I dont hear overly good reports coming from them ATM ie not answering the phone to league officials etc.

Having been involved at Houghton during the good times I am sadened at their demise

I'm trying to find out whether the people who have sat and regionalised the leagues are aware of the houghton situation. If the OP is right the leagues may change at the meeting a week come Monday.

Are Philli disbanding or summit? Heard on a thread a few weeks ago that there were probs there
A rumour has grown, of their own making, that they are in trouble and may fold.

Other clubs have been trying to get in touch with their club officials to arrange games and league officials were trying to get in touch with them and no one could get anyone to answer the phones.

Some clubs at junior level havent played a Phili side for 2 years.

They put an application into the NEPL and were turned down, I'm told due to the state of the pitch.

Summit must have gone badly wrong there then. Very well run club with strong junior section when i played DSL juniors in 90s.
