I think his record this season is success, top 6 was a remarkable achievement. He deserves an opportunity to build on that success. 40% win ratio at Sunderland and Blackburn isn't too bad at all. This fella who managed in New York recently isn't anything to shout about at all. Mowbray exceeded expectations this season, that's a good effort. What is success tho? Cos for SAFC it isn’t bobbing around the championship which given his track record is what we’ll do.
I don’t disagree. If we want promotion tho his track record shows it’s unlikely. I’m not saying get this guy in either. Until it happens or if it happens it’s hard to judge.I think his record this season is success, top 6 was a remarkable achievement. lot of links with Red Bull, with two of the candates named, i wonder if Billy is going to join the club at some point, stranger things etcHe was and then was poached by Red Bull FC in America
They appointed him as a "paper over the cracks and get through until the end of the season". Never did they expect Mowbray to do this well.

We appointed Mowbray in the Championship though. You're not going to get a fancy foreign fella coming to Sunderland in league one. First sniff of "success" and they want to start with the foreign mode which is clearly happening behind the scenes. They simply never expected Mowbray to do so well. The fact the club are head hunting abroad for managerial appointments clearly tells you the model they want to go down. That model would never have worked in league one.
Why?FWIW It is rumoured Salzburg want 3-5 million euros for Jaissle. So I don't think we will go for him. Farioli/Struber are available.
We appointed Mowbray in the Championship though.
Down KLD really, will see in the days ahead. He deserves to go again with a fit squad and (at least) 3 strikers, because he did an incredible job with what he had. I really questioned his appointment but admit I was very wrong. This has been the most enjoyable season, watching the best football, since the Reidy years.
Working on that basis, the signings of Ousama Dembele and Jude Bellingham should help mask any shortcomings he has as manager.Yes, he was the one photographed at the Birmingham? Game
For the last two and a half years, according to this place, those baffling decisions have included appointing Alex Neil and appointing Mowbray. They’ve worked out alright haven’t they?i often feel like following sunderland is a like journey from one baffling decision to the next... followed by someone quiping... "typical sunderland"
Aye but they’ve got a much better squad, parachute payments etc. not a great comparison to where the clubs are.Paul Heckingbottom's record wasn't anything to shout about and 83 games later since taking the job full time he's now promoted out of league. His role as interim manager at Sheffield United, he lost 8 in 11 albeit in league above but they reverted back to him as a foreign manager didn't work and a year and a half later he's got them promoted and had them in the play offs the season before.
The target is a return to the premer league, and as you wisely say, botchie, one season in the premer league, we need a coach capable enough to take us up, keep us up, and then push the club onwards, i am not sure about the names suggested, but i assume at a high level of the club, that is the thought process along the model working going forward to stablity in the premer league. There’s a bit of perspective needed here imo. Sentiment is probably kicking in for the majority of us. Mowbray has over 800 games as a manager, but only one season in the Premier league. He has been involved in the play off 6 times, but never won them. We finished on 69 points and it could be argued that would have been more with a fully fit squad, however we don’t know that for certain. 69 points isn't usually enough to get you into 6th place. The word 'overachievment' is getting used a lot, despite everyone saying how good our players look. Again I think saying overachieving is harsh on what are very good players who have proved themselves capable at this level. The bottom line for me is that whilst fans expectations have been exceeded, Mowbray has managed to get us to finish at a level he has achieved quite consistently over his career. History suggests that he doesn't go above this level and surely we all want to be playing higher up?
It was Mowbray this season who got us to the playoffs with a depleted and mostly young inexperienced squad. I don’t consider it clever to not replace long term injuries and Simms in January. We don’t know which players from the current squad will be here next season or whether they will be replaced. So much in the air it would be better to have continuity with a safe pair of hands in Mowbray rather than a new head coach who will be starting from scratch. It would be a risk to be fair, they keep taking risks, I'd consider a shed load of their decisions to be very brave and trying to be very clever.
As far as im concerned almost all of those decisions have turned out to be very clever and you don't get drastic change by settling I guess, of course, something will go wrong at some point and scores will be waiting with daggers in hand but the club has been crying out for a bright set out lad for the longest time, I couldn't be happier that we appear to have them.
Ultimately it won't be the coach who decides where we finish next season.
I'm pretty chilled about it all. I love the job Mowbray has done this season and would have no complaints if he stayed, but equally I'd happily support any decision to replace him if it improved us further. The club aren't actively trying to fuck us over, they're trying to improve us. And whilst Mowbray has an enormous amount of credit in the bank, maybe he's not the man they want to push the club to the next level with? If that's the case I'm fine with that, because I trust the people who are running the club now and think they know what they are doing.
I'm not privy to what goes on behind closed doors but maybe there's stuff we aren't aware of, maybe from the perspective of the people running the show they feel a clean break with Mowbray going out on a high is the best thing for everyone.
I don't know. Like I say, I feel confident every decision is taken with the club's best interests at heart, and whether that's replacing the manager or signing new players, I'm happy to back them. As much as Mowbray has earned our trust, so have the ownership group and the off-the-field team. I trust the process, but obviously understand not everyone does and are maybe more sceptical.
Way I see it, if you really do trust them, you have to back their decisions.
Correct mid way through a season clearly as a "paper over the cracks" until the end of the season where they club have been scouting foreign managers to implement this model. The club never in a million years expected Mowbray to do as well as he did, especially when they didn't back him in January with a striker. Mowbray has given them a headache now.
Depends what you mean by inexperience. Dan Neil rocked up his 100th appearance this season. Patto already our first choice keeper since last season. Cirkin first choice left back since last season. It was Mowbray this season who got us to the playoffs with a depleted and mostly young inexperienced squad. I don’t consider it clever to not replace long term injuries and Simms in January. We don’t know which players from the current squad will be here next season or whether they will be replaced. Doesn't speakman usually do an end of season open letter ? Furthermore I recall KLD doing an interview on talk sport confirming Johnson was stayingThe Club could put out a statement confirming Mowbray is in charge next season and kill off all this unhelpful speculation. If they don’t do so this week I think that suggests he will be leaving.
No need to feel sorry for him as he will have his remaining year off on full pay and will be free to take any job offer that comes along.
That said, I would quite like him to have another season with us.
Nowhere near mid way of the seasonCorrect mid way through a season clearly as a "paper over the cracks" until the end of the season where they club have been scouting foreign managers to implement this model.
