Tommy Watson

How many good games did he play for us ?

2, plus 20 minutes at Wembley
Is the correct answer. I can't remember any other game where he had a blinder or was hugely influential.
I never really understood why Brighton were so desperate to get him. I guess he fits their model but he was nowhere near ready for the PL. But we got the best deal possible and he likely will make it.

He probably would have got more game time here, particularly over the afcon and more opportunities off the bench- with Mundle being Injured and Le Bris liking to bring wingers off the bench.

Personally I would have expected Brighton to give him more opportunities in the PL, he's part of the reason they let Adringa come here.

But I'm sure he'll have a great half season and be given opportunities when he's back. If we get to the summer though and Brighton have lost interest (like they did with Adringa when something new and shiny came along) we might want to consider offering them their money back.
4 year contract paid down at 2.5 million a year. Even if he doesn't make it, with 20 to 40 PL appearances over a couple of seasons, another10 or more appearances in cup games - they'll get their money back with a sale to top-end championship/ Dortmund/ lower prem.
I will always be grateful for the goal he scored in the final, but I think he was badly advised by his agent and I think he would have had a better career and development here. Unfortunately and I hope I’m wrong he will end up as a journeyman going from club to club, and never reaching his full potential.
If the club had thought the same, we would have kept him on. Money was never a reason for the sale it turns out.

Yet aother ex player hated by a section of our fans for nowt

I mean tbf, if Phillips can be hated anyone can.
A lot of people taking it very personally, as though Watson left them. Some wanting him to have a shit career just because he had the audacity to leave Sunderland.
Funny thing is if he was still here he would possibly be starting most games on the left wing.
He wouldn't.

Aye, it's embarrassing.

Also had the audacity to score the winner in the play off final for us when he couldve just dialled it in.

He definitely would. He’s a good player with a ton of potential. He’s the exact player we would be giving plenty of games, plus nobody has really held down that left wing spot

I've just gone through the 3 pages and can't find any hate anywhere. One dubious poster who went in a bit harsh and there seems to be more hate for Ian Harte. I'm confused though - I thought it had been cleared up that Danny Graham was the agent? I might be completely wrong though.

This thread is a good read.

Set his career back to get rich quick. Looking like a very poor choice.
Not sure that is true tbh

Brighton watched him (as did a lot of top clubs) for a long time before making their bid

When the move was agreed there was no guarantee we would get promoted- who knows without VAR and Tommy’s last minute heroics at Wembley we might well be playing Swansea not West Ham today

Tommy is still only 19 and Brighton have a good record for developing players and then allowing them to move when opportunity arises.

One thing is for sure he has the pace, power and skill to make it if he develops in the coming years - I hope he makes it and will always remember the play off final goal (mainly because I missed it at Wembley having gone for a lucky piss thinking the game was heading to extra time 🤣🤣)

A half fit mundle, an out of form Adingra. Like I said nobody has nailed down that left wing spot and Watson would be getting a more first team minutes than he’s getting at Brighton.
He couldn't nail down that spot in the Championship. Maybe during AFCON he might have had a bit of game time but we've had Talbi and Le Fee on the left at times and they're both better than Watson.
