Tommy Watson ( ...off to Brighton)

I think it’s a win for all involved, the player and both clubs.
Think for us it's the best we could have got given the circumstances rather than an outright win.
£10m is decent wedge for where we are but his potential is worth a lot more even right now, unfortunately he's got only a year left and obviously wants away. It's peanuts really for Brighton and well worth the risk. Hope we've got a decent sell on clause and we get maximum from it which means the lad will have developed well.

Not a fan of the timing of the announcement but good luck to the lad.

It feels like we’re lightyears from telling these clubs to feck off and paying enough to prevent lads being tempted imho.

Till we do this were fecked imo.

Stewart
Clarke
Watson

If Jobe and Rigg go at 20 and 18 = soon as possible
We knocked back bids for Clarke the year before, we knocked back bids for Watson in the last 2 windows, we rejected a bid from Palace for Jobe and we held onto Rigg despite him being free to sign anywhere he wanted in June last year.

This is just one of those times where a PL club has us beat. Watson wants to go, understandably, and won't sign a new deal, so get the best possible fee for him now. It's not about a "model", it's just sensible.

Fact of the matter is Brighton can afford to take a £10m punt on a player who may or may not get into their first team over the coming years.

Reality is if we have £10m we need to spend it on someone who can go into the first team and make an impact now - just like we did with Isidor.

£10m is a lot for someone who may or may not have displaced Mundle on the LW next season. It’s probably best for all parties.

The clubs done the only thing it can do considering he simply would have ran down his contract.
I’m just a bit disappointed in the player though it just reinforces the view that they don’t think like us fans.
They’re hard nosed professionals even 18 year old local kids like him,who you would think would be wanting to live the dream, but there you go.

This has more than a grain of truth… one additional point, young people maybe are more susceptible to persuasion… the advice he’s received has clearly been to make the move. Time will tell if it was correct.

Watson wanted to go, in the end we had to let him go, his message was utter bollocks, Sunderland fan desperate to leave at 18, bizarre. Wait and see if we go up.

However, I am doubting our plans overall for the first time, its not a good sign that we could not get one of our own to sign a deal, been here since 6. We clearly give young players game time, and have a great eye for a player, but this is Sunderland and it has to end up with consistent premier league footy. And Iam not convinced it will.

I think the aim is more to be self sufficient, which is obviously not a bad thing, but we dont seem to be able to match wages or ambitions of players. Selling Clarke and spendin the money on 2 players have contributed absolutely nothing this season, but will probs be good in a years time, kind of sums it up.

I dunno, I am rambling a bit but this disapointed me and its not a good look

I really dont like the comments by Speakman (who I always defend) in this and the Clarke deals. Along the lines of "proud of our role in his development"....and for me that is just utter bollocks, proud to flog our best player to f***ing Ipswich and proud to sell off one of our best young talents before he has barely kicked a ball for us. That is not what the club should be about.

Not for me thanks.

BTW there is absolutely no way Watson should play another minute for our first team or Under 21 team...again this is not my usual position...but fuck him...no chance.
Your post is a good and balanced one
If he dosnt as you have said want to be here then we have little option but to cash in now ?
Be interesting to see how Reggie responds to ( hopefully ) some questions on this today ( not the mundane theoretical ones )
“ Are you concerned you are losing a local lad who has played a handful of games -is an safc fan and wants to be away at 18?”
I hope the questioning is along those lines.
Reggie may straight bat his answers but if he’s cheesed off who knows ?( yes he is aware we sell players but he was on full on praise mode for Watson not long back )
This is the area of most concern for fans and should therefore be the main focus of the media ( in my humble )
Then we move on

It’s a job to them, they go wherever pays the most money Rigg , Jobe and Neil to follow soon enough.
