Tommy Watson ( ...off to Brighton)

I wouldn’t be surprised if he was on that, let’s be honest his rise has been very quick, we are not talking about rigg here that had tremendous buzz around him last year before he signed his deal. He’s made very quick progress has Watson and maybe he has outpaced his current deal very quickly. Hopefully we offer him a new one soon.

If he signed a contract now it wouldn't be 600 quid as he was playing regularly before injured, obviously his value goes up with that. When he signed his contract as a 17 year old with very few squad inclusions, different kettle of fish.

Guesswork, but I'd say the most recent contract Watson has been offered doesn't meet his advisers' views of Watson's worth. Doesn't mean Watson wants away by not signing it, just means he doesn't want tying down to a contract that in 6 months times is not in line with his value to the club. It's in his interests to play his way into the starting 11 on a regular basis and then negotiate his salary. There's no rush for either him or the club. He's under contract for 18 months.

Just on Rigg, the Sunderland Echo reported that he was paid 220 quid a week as an apprentice. You can see that a 17 year old signing his first contract who has barely been in the squad at a second division club, wouldn't be on much more than 600 quid.

Reckon people are getting carried away with the whole idea that football is full of money from top to bottom. It is in when you prove your worth and play regularly in the first team, particularly at a top flight club. Watson was nowhere near that when he signed.

Have you actually noticed how many players move abroad at 17 / 18 these days? Have you noticed how many kids are being poached by big clubs at 16 / 17 these days? We poached Jobe!

Why do you think Rigg stayed? Because we gave him big money and he was being given a chance in the first team. Watson wasn't quite at Rigg's level but he was an England under 17 international attracting interest from other teams. We will have given him a good package to get him to stay here.

Madness to suggest we'd give him bog standard cash. Our whole model is based on developing players and selling them for big money. You can't make good money if you're losing players at 17.

From where I'm standing, those who don't believe it are simply saying: "it can't be true, madness".

That's what's been reported by a few outlets, the Sunderland Echo being one. I reckon there are other reasons to believe it, e.g. Rigg's 220 quid as an apprentice as reported by the Sunderland Echo, organisations that work with young players giving us a salary range, Watson being not even a squad regular when he signed.

I reckon it's about right, but we'd only go 'round in circles from here with others saying: "it can't be true", and me pointing to various sources suggesting it can very much be true.

Either way, the lad is a Sunderland player, just needs to have a good second half of the season when he returns.

Doesn’t Watson drive a Merc?

Like I’ve said £600 is what Scottish clubs are paying decent talent in the 2nd division. Not a chance he’s on £600 week here
Watson is absolutely not on £600 a week
Absolute clowns on this thread like

Chris Rigg will be on about £10K a week now.

Watson, an England youth player won't be on £600. He would have fucked off if we'd offered that man!

Reckon you're plucking figures out of thin air, Keith, and repeating: "it can't be true".
You're being ridiculous.

As I've said, good young players are being poached left, right and centre by clubs in this country and abroad. Tommy Watson, England youth international will have had clubs sniffing around and didn't sign a professional contract for 5 months. We would have lost him if we didn't cough up decent cash. It really is that simple.

It's all your assumption Keith as opposed to any source to back up what you're saying. Reports in the public domain don't support what you're saying. You find it hard to believe. I don't given that Watson wasn't even a regular squad player when he signed as a 17 years old. I reckon trebling his wages from apprentice stage as a 16 year old, if Sunderland Echo reports are to believed as well as other sources, wasn't a bad deal for a lad in his position at his age.

Either way, can't keep going round in circles with: "it can't be true". Let's agree to disagree.

Yep. He's really going to be able to afford that and the insurance on £600 a week isn't he.
£620 with tips I've heard...

There's literally family friends telling you!!

You can't keep players if you don't offer than what they will get elsewhere. It's an open market FFS 😂
