Locke's SAFC
Striker
I wouldn’t be surprised if he was on that, let’s be honest his rise has been very quick, we are not talking about rigg here that had tremendous buzz around him last year before he signed his deal. He’s made very quick progress has Watson and maybe he has outpaced his current deal very quickly. Hopefully we offer him a new one soon.
If he signed a contract now it wouldn't be 600 quid as he was playing regularly before injured, obviously his value goes up with that. When he signed his contract as a 17 year old with very few squad inclusions, different kettle of fish.
Guesswork, but I'd say the most recent contract Watson has been offered doesn't meet his advisers' views of Watson's worth. Doesn't mean Watson wants away by not signing it, just means he doesn't want tying down to a contract that in 6 months times is not in line with his value to the club. It's in his interests to play his way into the starting 11 on a regular basis and then negotiate his salary. There's no rush for either him or the club. He's under contract for 18 months.
Just on Rigg, the Sunderland Echo reported that he was paid 220 quid a week as an apprentice. You can see that a 17 year old signing his first contract who has barely been in the squad at a second division club, wouldn't be on much more than 600 quid.
Reckon people are getting carried away with the whole idea that football is full of money from top to bottom. It is in when you prove your worth and play regularly in the first team, particularly at a top flight club. Watson was nowhere near that when he signed.
