The club have expressed that the deal wasn't one they were looking to do. Selling off our you talent who we've invested in for 12 years for 10m is pittance.

So, despite your reply. Club had to do the deal as thge lad and his agent know it's 18 months left on the contract and therefor, had to negotiate the best deal they could.

This kid, 12 years at SAFC...SOLD!

Don't get me wrong. Brighton is a nice place to live if you have the money.

There could be a bit more to it than that. None of us know. Maybe he wanted assurances on playing time that we weren’t willing to give. Or a longer contract. Or an agreement in the new contract to let him go if a premiership club come in for him. Or more likely he wanted x thousand a week and we weren’t willing to pay that much. Or wanted to delay signing until he knew what league we would be in. It doesn’t mean the club are lying or Tommy is to blame. It’s just the way contract negotiations are.
The club are doing pretty well to determine well in advance whether he would sign the deal on offer so, if not, we still have time to sell him for decent money.

I dunno mind, they seem to have been pretty keen to sell him to me. At least not massively keen on not, but that’s fine it’s how it goes. He has also put 12 years into this and he needs to do what he thinks is best for him even if we don’t like it and 10m isn’t a pittance

Agree with loads of this. It’s all about what works for everyone and what everyone wants and this is what has been the end result. People have to get out of this mindset of leaves Sunderland equals greedy/bad person/ terrible agent and parents/wrong path for them but stays at Sunderland means good agent/good parents/ right mentality .

Yep, not as clean cut as some want to believe.
Didn’t Brighton come in for him last summer then again in January? The club knocked them back until it was clear Tommy wouldn’t sign a new deal. That doesn’t sound like they were keen to sell him.

He is still a boy. What I want to know is why, is it allowed for agents and clubs to poach such young players before they are even established.
 
End of the day , Tommy didnt want to be here. His father in law probably convinced him of that. Plus he maybe wanted it announcing now so him and Miss Harte can start house hunting without any secrecy.
it leaves a bitter taste in my mouth how an Easington lad , who still has plenty of time to develop and make mega bucks thinks Brighton is a better option for him personally. It ll be weird if we got promoted and hes loaned out at WBA

Of course Brighton won’t be relegated like Ipswich but if Watson makes ten premier league starts next season , Brighton will have lost a few players and will be struggling

League cup , fa cup beckons with 5 or 10 mins here and there

Or more likely out on loan

The lad has achieved nothing in the game yet though it will be interesting ii see how it works out
 
Would've liked to see him start in a few games before he departs to Brighton. He looked good before his injury but not sure how he will do at Premier level. I think Mundle is better tbh. Wish him well all the same.

In terms of the quality of the buying club's recruitment ability it sorts the wheat from the chaff and as often as not the young players will fail to live up to their initial promise. Besides, we're a club that has such a policy at the very heart of our own recruitment.
 
I know one thing for sure he will be nowhere near Brightons first team next season. Will be out on loan to a championship team most likely or a European league. He's not good enough at the moment for Premier league football.

Bang out of order in my book. A couple of dodgy performances from him now will leave him wide open to all sorts of accusations. It's a clever way to make sure he isn't used as much as your club might want to, to keep him fresh for the summer.

Only thing i can think is club can use it as an excuse if we dont go up / he doesnt produce. Or to use it to drop him and create the excuse!!

Look at the january window. Didnt scream of giving it a go did it. Therefore things like this suggest theres a similar mindset behind the publicity.
