Tom Cannon bid in - now signed for Sheff U.

We didn’t invest the Stewart money. Then people said “wait till January” now it’s “wait till the windows closed”.

f***ing tedious mate.

We didn’t invest the Stewart money well. We did spend but it was spread thinly across numerous players with very little positive track record or experience to speak of.

Again, that’s not what my understand of the model was. My understanding was that we aimed to sell high, and replace with quality rather that quantity to make the squad stronger.

I’m sure there was something yesterday saying he is on 47 grand a week at Leicester.

If true then that alone would rule us out of ever being a serious option

This was also my understanding. We sell our best players and invest in upgrading across the squad. Over time, the entire squad quality gets better and better - BUT that requires reinvesting the money in the squad. I'm not full meltdown but I'm disappointed THUS FAR. Still another day to go - we'll see how it pans out.

Serious question how can’t we compete with clubs in this league for players. I get the model but if we don’t lift our wage cap and spend a little (after selling our best player) we're never gonna sign the better players. Float around mid table in the championship year in year out like Preston.
To be fair, we did get Ballard, Jobe, and Rigg to sign contracts this summer. Certainly significant wage increases were part of this. Last summer was Hume, Cirkin, and Patto. This next summer should be Cirkin, Neil, and Roberts (with Roberts needing to have a good year to get offered a new one).

At least they money was pretty much all reinvested though. At the minute it doesn't look like this one will be.
Which is best? Reinvesting it in players that aren’t ready or being smarter this season which looks like they have been given the team looking great and the start we’ve had.

I’d rather we didn’t spend a penny than repeat last season.

The thing is there’s bids and money going into players and targets. They’re obviously willing to do it, I just don’t think they will deviate being strict with the finances. Rightly or wrongly. You could argue they are doing it correctly given what we’ve seen. However early it is in the season.

I don’t disagree with needing to sign another forward.

You’ve got people booting off at the fee for cannon yesterday. Now everyone’s kicking off we won’t spend more.

Only this place.

Come back to me after the deadline has passed.

People just cannot let go of last season.

I’m not interested in spending too much or too little or whatever. I don’t buy into that school of thought. Only ever sign frees if it gets us success I don’t care.

But don’t sell our best players so that we can “reinvest” then sign absolute shite in positions we don’t need.

How people can’t see the answer already is beyond me.
When we sold Clarke, people were saying to wait and see what we do.
Now it looks like we won’t spend a fee on a player, it’s all fine as that’s the plan of being sustainable.
We are currently the only club in the top two divisions not to spend and a fee.
People forget that this January, the club literally gave away our hospitality bar to our hated rivals under the premise of ‘fleecing them for money’. Where did that money go? Styles’s loan?

I don’t disagree. I don’t want a repeat of last summer. So far it hasn’t been.

But we need a striker.

The issue is always going to be that they want £20m for Clarke... but won't pay him a £20m players wages.

Even when he is sold, they won't give an 8m signing what he would be expecting, so we buy cheap again.

I honestly think Speakman has one hand tied behind his back trying to build a promotion side on what he's given financially.

People still bringing this shite up? Totally irrelevant to our transfer strategy.

I’m not having that like. Their contract improvements were likely counter balanced by players exiting the club.

Are we not best off leaving the meltdowns for after the window? I agree that we desperately need a striker, but it hasn’t slammed shut yet

People are pissing the bed because the players we have been linked to have gone elsewhere or “quiet” whatever that means.

And yet 95% of deals we have made over the past three seasons have come from nowhere, with barely a whisper in the media until the ink is literally drying on the contract and the scarf pic is being uploaded onto SAFC.com

If I was a betting man, I’d say we get a striker tomorrow that hasn’t been mentioned once on this entire forum, yet.

It's tedious being told to wait until the window is closed?

It’s tedious watching them sell our best players in the name of improving across the board, then not doing it.

Last year they signed mostly shite. This year they’ve just not bothered at all. Three head coaches told them we needed a striker. We still do.

And we should all put total faith in them finding a really good one, given their impeccable record at doing so.

That's utterly and completely mental if that's true, even if he was on half of that would be way too much.

Perfectly plausible to be honest. Their wage bill is reported in the accounts at 60 million a year.

Ultimately that’s 20 plus players on the equivalent of 50 grand a week. They will have a few on more like Vardy but it’s believable that he is in that ballpark being what they paid in a battle to win his signing.

I agree. I think his explanations post recruitment have been patronising and he hasn’t necessarily found best value for money (no-one really talks about data based recruitment anymore!) but he has to work within certain parameters. The same applied to Steve Davison in his role. He could be infuriating, but he worked within a remit.

KLD is responsible for the budget. It’s as simple as that.

It’s like a lot of our fans don’t actually observe what is going on before them.

All in the name of positivity of course
Last year we spent 12m on transfers and earned around 13m on sales (Stewart 9m, Gooch 1.2, Pritch 115k, plus Lihadji ? 2 to 4 million but nobody knows). Our billionaire owner is not trying to make money off the club via pocketing a percentage of a few million pounds earned in transfers. He's trying build a sustainable club without injecting his own cash for transfer fees. He owns the club and I don't begrudge his approach so long as we are seeing progress. I've seen progress. Life is good :)

They just practicing for tomorrow when the board don’t deliver what we need, again
Oh yes, because you know we aren’t going to sign anyone do you? Do you really think the 3 ruled out today were the only ones we were targeting? Wouldn’t think pretty much all our deals this windows have came out of nowhere…
