Some Interesing quotes from his talk at Sporting Memories yesterday.
He’d worked in banking here and in Australia, then for the Australian government until persuaded six years ago by Durham chairman (Lord) Ian Botham – “over three or four bottles of red wine”- to take office at the Riverside.
“He asked me to come to Durham. I said no chance. He’s a good salesman, Both.”
The club, said Tim, had been in a bit of a state. “I didn’t know how much. I don’t think he did, either.” Much has changed, and markedly for the better. Some more of his observations, reproduced (of course) with permission:
On losing: “I get really irritated, I find it annoying. No one comes near me. It took me a long time to get over Worcestershire (earlier in the season).”
On a squeezed County championship: “We should never be playing first class cricket on April 5. More than half the games are played in April and September. It’s insane.”
On red/white ball: “I can take or leave white ball. I can remember zillions of first class moments, I can hardly remember anything about 20/20,”
On the hotel being built at the Riverside: “It will double our turnover and quadruple our profits.”
On the future: “We should be concentrating on establishing a world class red ball competition.”
so he's going to be our red ball saviour? Aye!
