Thoughts on last night

I thought we started well, they seemed to score from nothing, then Roefs made that daft mistake and we completely lost the plot thereafter.

A very strange game as we started well and dominated most of the second half, granted it was over by then. We didn't create many clear cut opportunities mind, wish we'd shoot from outside the box more frequently.

Haven't got a clue what was going on with our defence, they clearly found weaknesses and followed their instructions perfectly.

It reminded me of the Stoke game a few years ago where we lost 5-1 I think it was, although I actually thought we played a lot better last night.

Overall very frustrating, baffling and embarrassing for the club and all involved.

Most mental this with that result is we were well on top for the first 15 minutes and looked the only team scoring. That stupid pass out from the back that they got their second with completely killed us and the game. If we could’ve kept it to 1-0 and see it through to half time I would’ve felt based off the rest of this season we have a good chance of getting back into it. A truly awful, self-harming tactic that I will never ever understand or think is any good.
Nothing wrong with passing it out. Passing it straight to the opposition however…

I thought they looked well dodgy at the back. Unfortunately, every time we got around their box, we decided to somehow end up going backwards and play ourselves into trouble.

They had to go for it and their gaffer went with 2 upfront (can't do that in modern football apparently) and got their rewards.

Embarrassing indeed, just feels like we’re never a million miles away from an implosion

If we go and lose to wolves then I think he might be on thin ice. Following that we have Man U at home & Everton away, 2 really tough fixtures.

Clearly the club have briefed the press to quash rumour, but any more defensive shockers like we’ve had in the last 2 and they may re-assess.
No doubt Chelsea will be back to winning ways for the last game of the season as well

One of those games you get
I've seen all of those players play way way better
Blows all the media hype about certain big names, xhaka , roeffs , Regis. They are all prone to errors .
Regis gets paid a lot to work out what went wrong and address it . Plenty to think about. I think he's a tactician and a thinker who's brave and is still learning by making mistakes .
I was done with it by 10.15
Even a mad 45 min car delay mile from home didn't bother me .

We’re shipping a shitload of goals at the moment and it’s a worrying trend that I don’t think RLB has sussed. Whatever he’s doing in that area isn’t working, and he needs to change the things.

I don’t think, though, that the crowning moment to illustrate this would be at home against Notts Forest.

Concede three goals on 6 occasions in 2026. It’s becoming a thing that we’re really poor defensively.

Worst goal difference outside of the bottom 4.

To sum up the day I was behind the Forest team coach on the A1 on its way to the airport ffs

Sorry but I’ll never understand it. It’s directly cost us at least two goals in the last few games and pretty much always seems to heap pressure on ourselves as teams press us. Football is a simple game, if the ball isn’t near your own box you aren’t in huge danger of conceding, so why invite it on by playing in and around it? Madness imo and that goal last night, just as Newcastle’s was, is firmly on Le Bris for me for clearly drilling that tactic into them. Our defenders never look comfortable doing it and I can’t say I blame them.

Le Fee was our best player and not sulking

Hume, Alderete and Mukiele were constantly out of position, Xhaka completely lost it, Diarra was hopeless, Rigg weak as piss and Brobbey was a liability. Roefs turned in a memorable performance as one of the worst goalkeeping displays in recent years.
Can't disagree really. Thought the OP was unfair regarding le fee.
4-0 down to a relegation battling team at half team isn't a disgraceful performance?
He also thinks we put in a sterling performance second half when in reality it was cos they completely eased off and still won the half 1-0.

I’m the opposite. Going to a team in the top 5 and losing is easier to take that getting torn apart on your own patch for me.
Villa just felt like a huge missed opportunity. Was totally in our hands to come away from a really tough game with three points and go sixth.

Last night was something else. There was a ten minute spell where I was raging but for the most part it was just apathy. As a result it was obviously was worse but regardless of scoreline it just felt like one of those days. The var nonsense encapsulated the whole thing. Made our own problems for sure but absolutely nothing went our way.

Considering only Ballard was really at it the whole night, the two African heedless chickens in midfield were totally overrun and Roefs had clearly been blinded in the warm up we did well to keep it down to five.

There’s a lack of people taking responsibility. Sometimes taking responsibility can mean wellying it up into the channels to relive the pressure of a relentless press, give time to reset.
Or it can mean having a dig from the edge of the box when it’s not a clear opening because something might happen, you never know. Or putting the cross in early instead of chopping back constantly and recycling to the other side of the pitch. We need to be braver in these situations instead or trying to create “perfect” opportunities. There seems to be a collective fear of messing up sometimes, the more last night went on the worse it got.
