This is why I’ll never be comfortable with the model

This day was always coming. We all thought the Stewart deal was good business - particularly as he ended-up injured again but we best get used to selling our biggest asset each summer.
IF we spent most of that money on a single replacement in order to progress, as Brentford did then fair enough but I think we all know that ain’t happening.

It’s happened to Leeds, Coventry, Hull and many others. Why wouldn’t it happen to us? We can’t compete with prem clubs while we are in the championship.

I know it’s tough mate. Ba/Mundle definitely aren’t ready. Let’s hope the replacements are good enough. Proper shit feeling losing your best player
They haven't embarked on a strategy like this, or to these lengths. In fact no one else has before.

Yeah but sell Stewart for a fee and invest it in a suitable replacement up front, or a couple of players who can hack it in the Championship...... Or do what we did.

Exactly mate. Does anyone think we’ll do a Brentford and sign a single replacement for the money to stop us going backwards - or a load of young uns in the hope some make us money?

Good post. This is life as a club with a successful transfer strategy. Other clubs want your players. The key is how do we reinvest the money.
Let’s see if it’s successful eh.

As now we’ve made our first big sale this is when the bigger investment is going to start and we start signing more established players

They were speakmans words when he sold us this model. Let’s see what happens next.

We've known it for 3 years. We know they want to be self sustainable and sign young talent for peanuts and sell them for a massive profit

So why are some of you shocked and angry ? Has it come as a surprise ? Wether you agree with it, believe in it, it doesn't really matter as non of us can do anything about it.

The biggest thing I take from selling a player for a massive profit is they must reinvest it in to the squad if it makes us stronger then fair enough

As for jack good luck to the kid he's been absolutely phenomenal in a red and white shirt and single handedly win us many many games.

We moved on we've still got a lot of incredible young talent in the squad. The best young talent most of us have seen in decades.

Let's be honest after the poor campaign last season most of us expected many more of our young talent to move on. The fact that the majority of them are still here means we still have e a good shot at promotion

Jack Clarke will never be replaced as he gives us so much as an attacking threat and there's no one out there who will make as much a difference as he does.

However these young lads are incredibly talented and adding a forward or 2 might just make us stronger. Only time will tell. Let's just see how the window pans out.

I'm still super excited to watch this young exciting energetic squad this season.
What gives you the confidence they'll spend any of this £11m wisely?

People will point out after years of Jack Rodwell style signings it’s nice to see us making profits on players. First Stewart now Clarke. 2 out of 3 seasons now we have sold our best player. It might look good on the books and be financially good for the club but is this what you really want Sunderland football club to be? A club that sells its best players to clubs half our size. I was gutted when stewart left and i’m gutted clarke is leaving.

If KLD was owner when kevin phillips was here he would have flogged him after his first good season for profit.

Nice to make profit but better to build a team around our best players and keep them and let fans build connection with the players like quinn and phillips etc.

How well we spend the money i guess will tell us just how good the model is.
For a start that's being disrespectful to Ipswich and no wonder fans like you give this clubs fan base a bad name

Brighton have just signed a player from Leeds going by your logic then that's insane

That's bollocks mind. Bellingham, Rigg, Hume, Neil, Ballard have all impressed and we haven't flogged them. I don't mind us selling our players, every club does it. The key is how do we reinvest.

Once they’ve impressed sufficiently, if they do, they’ll be sold. Two of them aren’t yet 19 and have a long way to go. The others haven’t been consistent enough, influential enough, or impressed enough at this level yet. If they were all as impressive as some suggest, we’d have picked up a lot more points over the course of the last two seasons.

Tbh it’s indicative of how badly we’ve been ran in the past that people lose their heads over this. So much shite that no one else wanted on our books that we are overwhelmed and shocked when someone further up the ladder buys a great player off us.

Happens at most clubs people! Are Leeds not ambitious anymore? They’ve had to sell. So’ve Sheff Utd, Boro, Burnley, Coventry etc etc

If the model is purely about sell sell then he’d have been off a year ago, Jobe, Neil, Ballard, Hume, Rigg and Ekwah would have all been off by now too!

Gutted Clarke is going, but to me, the biggest transfer deal of the summer was getting Rigg to sign a professional contract. Lads going to be a massive star, bigger than Clark imo, and locking him down so we can insert sell on clauses etc when we do sell him will be massive. I hope Clarke doesnt leave, but if he's been offered a new contract, and doesnt want to sign, then he is worth more now than next year (if we don't get promoted that is - which is the risk)
