This is why I’ll never be comfortable with the model

We’ve sold our best player. After we sold our best striker and one of our best players last season. It’s the modus operandi. They’ve said it themselves.

The reason why we’ve not sold any others is because none of them have impressed enough, either through lack of ability or fitness, to attract real attention or bids. If they do, they’ll be off in good time.

I’ll eat my hat if this gets us promoted any time soon
That's bollocks mind. Bellingham, Rigg, Hume, Neil, Ballard have all impressed and we haven't flogged them. I don't mind us selling our players, every club does it. The key is how do we reinvest.

No. It’s a miserable experiment, devoid of the romanticism that makes football wonderful and doesn’t allow heroes to be forged.

A flickering flame quickly extinguished in the name of sustainability. There’s a difference between understanding it and welcoming it. Too many welcome this bullshit for my liking and happily use the same language as the billionaire bean counters. Got to love it haven’t ya
Great post. Too many naive fans are buying this mantra about a model. We have lowered our expectations as a collective fan base and unless we strike lucky this moment could be a 'look what we had' point... two weeks into the season as well!

This is why i decided after the BCB shite these wankers wont get another penny out of me. Zero spend and taking a shite offer for our star player. Sooner he fooks off the better.
Wonder if thats what you'll say after we beat Burnley at the weekend??

Every club in the championship is a selling club. It’s not realistic for a championship club to retain all their best players when premier league teams are interested. Coventry lost Gyokeres and Hamer. Leeds have lost a lot of their best players. I do feel we could have got a bit more for Clarke but reinvest and move on like Coventry did with Wright replacing Gyokeres for example.
I just think this could have been a great season, I now feel we are a million miles away, Ba/Mundle not good enough to replace Clarke. I give up, I really do. I know some will not see an issue with selling one of our best but you look around and no one can replace his goals. This is why we'll never be big with these in charge. Nice kit though

It’s the reality of being in the Championship sadly and why we need to get out asap. We can’t be staying in this division. Do feel we could have got more from Ipswich tho.
If you constantly sell your best players we won't get promoted. That's the reality of this 'model'

The model is about to blow itself clean out of the water now

It was at this point Soeakman said the heavier investment would start, when we started pulling big fees for players they’d start spending bigger fees on players.

Over to you now KLD and Soeakman. I think we all know what will happen next

They had a decision to make though. He was in his last 2 years of his contract if he was determined to move and play premier league football then what should they do ?

Should they refuse a 20 million offer now and hopefully they get promoted or reject it and fail to go up and take 3 million next summer ?

Its great when fans lije you think everything is so cut and dried in life.
They've sold him for £11 million in the coffers now.
That's a crap deal.

We are selling the player who most wanted to leave. We did well to keep him last summer.

We have many players that clubs that are currently more successful than us want. Clarke, but also Bellingham, Rigg, Ballard, Neil, for sure. Probably Patterson, Ekwah, Hume and Cirkin as well. We've kept all them except Clarke.

The decision on Clarke should be judged on one thing alone really - who we replace him with and thus how do we mitigate the impact on the pitch. That’s the big question.

So why don’t we just stop wetting the bed and wait.

It’s happened to Leeds, Coventry, Hull and many others. Why wouldn’t it happen to us? We can’t compete with prem clubs while we are in the championship.

I know it’s tough mate. Ba/Mundle definitely aren’t ready. Let’s hope the replacements are good enough. Proper shit feeling losing your best player

What if the hoped big fees are actually on-the-cheap, substandard fees that we've been mugged of?

People will point out after years of Jack Rodwell style signings it’s nice to see us making profits on players. First Stewart now Clarke. 2 out of 3 seasons now we have sold our best player. It might look good on the books and be financially good for the club but is this what you really want Sunderland football club to be? A club that sells its best players to clubs half our size. I was gutted when stewart left and i’m gutted clarke is leaving.

If KLD was owner when kevin phillips was here he would have flogged him after his first good season for profit.

Nice to make profit but better to build a team around our best players and keep them and let fans build connection with the players like quinn and phillips etc.

How well we spend the money i guess will tell us just how good the model is.
I’m hoping we get players in to get us to the premier league and help us stay there. I think Clarke will be a big miss and could have helped us get promotion but I don’t think he is a top flight player.

What if that was the only offer they had on the table ? Should they just reject it wait till next summer and get 3 million for him
I'm sure if they did that then you would be on here next summer winging that they should have took 11 million for him this season

Hindsight is f***ing great if you're a football fan isn't it
.btw I'm not a happy clapper or a fan of the owners I'm just trying to see it from both sides

I am all for anything that means we don’t spend multiple seasons in league one. Yes nights like this hurt. But those seasons in league one were much darker days at the club than the day Jack Clarke leaves
