This is why I’ll never be comfortable with the model

It's gutting news, but there's been enough positives to look for in the opening two games of the season. Coupled with tying down some of our best prospects to longer contracts, good early signs from RLB, and (this remains to be seen) spending some of the profit on the names we've been linked with (Isidor and Šimić, and even Mendy if we're greedy) should hopefully see us navigate this and have a strong campaign.

Clarke's stats over the years for us are ridiculous - I don't think there's a ready made replacement out there we could reasonably expect to buy. The hope is now that we can replace him in aggregate or that the new signings offer us something different and positive in their own right. The end of an era all the same...

Szmodics was the top scorer wasnt he? Scored 27 goals, probably as good as Clarke just older. He went for 10 million.

The fee for Clarke is about what he's worth. He's never worth 30/40 million.

We've sold one player

He is worth 40m.

What makes Archie Gray worth 40m but Clarke isn't?

Gray is crap

They've sold him too cheaply.
Hope this helps.
They had a decision to make though. He was in his last 2 years of his contract if he was determined to move and play premier league football then what should they do ?

Should they refuse a 20 million offer now and hopefully they get promoted or reject it and fail to go up and take 3 million next summer ?

Its great when fans lije you think everything is so cut and dried in life.

Sold him far too cheaply and we’re reliant on some new signings chipping in with a fair few goals and assists that we’ll be missing. After the last few transfer windows I’m not overly confident that they’ll get the right personnel.

I mean he isn't because no one bid 40 million for him  .

Archie Gray was 30 million and is much younger than Clarke. Clarke before he came to us bombed out in the Premier League and had to reignite his career in League One.

Nobody will bid 40m when you accept 15m as the first offer

We won't get out selling our better players though. Unfortunately we've lost a class player and a cheap replacement will be brought in. The Sunderland merry go round in full swing, progress, sell restart.
Every club in the championship is a selling club. It’s not realistic for a championship club to retain all their best players when premier league teams are interested. Coventry lost Gyokeres and Hamer. Leeds have lost a lot of their best players. I do feel we could have got a bit more for Clarke but reinvest and move on like Coventry did with Wright replacing Gyokeres for example.

We've known it for 3 years. We know they want to be self sustainable and sign young talent for peanuts and sell them for a massive profit

So why are some of you shocked and angry ? Has it come as a surprise ? Wether you agree with it, believe in it, it doesn't really matter as non of us can do anything about it.

The biggest thing I take from selling a player for a massive profit is they must reinvest it in to the squad if it makes us stronger then fair enough

As for jack good luck to the kid he's been absolutely phenomenal in a red and white shirt and single handedly win us many many games.

We moved on we've still got a lot of incredible young talent in the squad. The best young talent most of us have seen in decades.

Let's be honest after the poor campaign last season most of us expected many more of our young talent to move on. The fact that the majority of them are still here means we still have e a good shot at promotion

Jack Clarke will never be replaced as he gives us so much as an attacking threat and there's no one out there who will make as much a difference as he does.

However these young lads are incredibly talented and adding a forward or 2 might just make us stronger. Only time will tell. Let's just see how the window pans out.

I'm still super excited to watch this young exciting energetic squad this season.
👏

Think people can be rightfully angry tbh, it's the lack of faith in reinvestment that has people worried. We invested well in league 1 but last year was a joke. Along with the absolute shit show behind the scenes. If we don't go up this season we'll be in the same scenario with rigg, jobe etc next year

Best post I've read on here tonight and 👌

We can also include new contracts agreed for Ballard, Jobe and Rigg as well.

I think with Jack's agent he was always going to go, that's how he makes his money and looking at their portfolio he is the only asset on their books to generate any significant income.

always expected him to go and don't have a problem with that. the fee is the issue. you look at the money being chucked around and what others have gone for and we're selling arguably the best player in the league for what doesn't really seem like very much

just seems like the money isn't there and we've had to accept a poor fee for Clarke in order to finance bringing in a few punts

We’ve sold our best player. After we sold our best striker and one of our best players last season. It’s the modus operandi. They’ve said it themselves.

The reason why we’ve not sold any others is because none of them have impressed enough, either through lack of ability or fitness, to attract real attention or bids. If they do, they’ll be off in good time.

I’ll eat my hat if this gets us promoted any time soon

No. It’s a miserable experiment, devoid of the romanticism that makes football wonderful and doesn’t allow heroes to be forged.

A flickering flame quickly extinguished in the name of sustainability. There’s a difference between understanding it and welcoming it. Too many welcome this bullshit for my liking and happily use the same language as the billionaire bean counters. Got to love it haven’t ya
What a belter of a sentence that perfectly sums up this situation.
Have a like sir

"Breaking News"

KLD released from hospital.

All is well though, just a panic attack that he thought he would have to break into 'Oinky' (his piggy bank)
to sign a couple of players before the JC money was in the bank...
Net spend zero for another year.
