The sun and the moon

I always thought moonset and sunrise could only occur at the same time around the equinoxes what with the alignment of the Earth and Moon on the solar plain.

But I can only assume it's due to the precession of the Moon's orbit. Any of our resident astronomers care to tell me why my original thought was bollocks?

I've found it fascinating to see the setting moon and the rising sun together in the same clear sky this morning. Apologies if it is a dumb question, but is it possible to see them next to each other, either at sunrise or sunset?
They're often close together in the sky at new moon but the far side is illuminated so you won't see it. If the Moon passes in front of the Sun then you will obviously see it as a partial or total eclipse.
