The Pep myth

Getting to a champions league final doesn’t make you a successful manager. Winning it does. Arteta hasn’t won anything yet apart from an Fa cup with emery’s team. If he wins the league this season then you can call him successful
You haven't got a scooby doo about football buddy..

Don't think that is necessarily true to be honest - in the 10 years since he took over, Man United have comfortably outspent them, the difference between City, Arsenal and Chelsea is negligible and Liverpool and Spurs aren't a million miles off.

Arsenal have gone under the radar but Arteta has spent a shitload.

The issue I have with the money argument is that yes, they've spent a lot, but their spending power is comparable with the rest of the big 6, whereas during the 90s and early 00s Man United completely blew everyone else out the water until Chelsea did the same when Abramovic took over. Nobody could compete with them financially then whereas 5 other clubs can nowadays.

I think what set Pep apart from the rest is the way they've continually been up there amongst the top. Liverpool pushed them all the way when they came 2nd with 97 points then won the league but then fell apart the year after, with Klopp citing exhaustion when he resigned. Arsenal pushed them all the way for a couple of years but bottled the title in the second half of the season for two years in a row then had a poor season last year. City have had the odd poor season but to win 4 in a row and 6, possibly 7 out of 10 when everyone else fell apart when trying to retain it is impressive.
Spend in transfer fees and spend in wages are a very different thing though, and wages are way more impactful in the quality of player you recruit. Look at the Visitors. Everyone good turned them down last summer because they can't pay them the monthly, but still sign for lower transfer fees somewhere else.

Man City spend a shitton in wages. And that's before all the under the table brown paper envelope stuff that a lot of the charges relate to.

He is certainly a decent manager at clubs where he has the best players and far more, possibly illegal, investment. I’d like to see how he got on trying to get a smaller club up the leagues…

Pep leaving raises a few questions, especially with the 115 charges still hanging over the club. Maybe he knows more than he’s letting on.
It’s strange because he signed a long-term deal and said not long ago he’d stay even if they ended up in League One. Now he’s leaving, and it feels a bit like an easy exit while his reputation is still intact.
For me, he’s not quite the legend people say. At Barcelona, he inherited an unbelievable squad and had Messi coming through. At Bayern, the league wasn’t exactly competitive. And at City, he’s had huge financial backing, spending big money in every position.
I’d like to see how he’d handle a tougher job without all those advantages – something like Sunderland would be a completely different challenge.

They never will.

I imagine he needs top players to understand and deliver the tactics he employs . We’ve seen teams of inferior standards making fools of themselves trying to copy the Pep way of playing .
I’m sure he could adapt but maybe he just doesn’t want to .

It's a totally different skill set. Some managers are suited to teams with inferior players and maximising the returns. Some are better with more dominant teams

Why would you if you can earn top money at a top club I guess
