The Pep myth

Not sure why it’s become so accepted for the likes of him, Arteta and Slot (and Klopp before him) to confront referees on the pitch. It seems difficult enough to get good referees without all that going on. There’s even a box to help them to know where to stand during the game but they can’t even stick to that.

Vast majority of players he’s coached say he’s the best they ever worked with; he redefined the use of space on the pitch by dividing the field up into 22 zones and having it so you can only have so many players in a horizontal and vertical line at once - bit confusing and takes players a while to learn but absolutely revolutionary.

When people say he’s only had good teams, they did a study a while back where they looked at all the top teams in the world over x number of years - their goals for and against (so for example Chelsea 2013 compared with City 2018 etc etc) and all of his teams are in the top right of the graph i.e. most goals scored, least conceded. So even among other managers who have good teams, his are the best by a long way. And his win % is comfortably higher than everyone including Ferguson.

Would I be more revolutionary if I divided the pitch into 2 zones? Their goalmouth and our goalmouth. Score in theirs, don’t let it into ours.

You generally only end up managing top sides/clubs if you're good. And managers tend to be one of the reasons a team is good. The odd one where a lesser manager ends up in charge of a top side/club fails and doesn't get another.

He’s clearly been a fantastic coach but it’s all looked a bit stale with City for the last 18 months and yesterday’s performance seemed to have a ‘beginning of the end’ vibe to it. They were horrific and the fact that they only list by 2 massively flattered them.

The innovative managers are total myths.
Pep May have new dangled ideas with a huge disposal of cash to buy the very best players to experiment with.
If we are going to go down this route is Tony pulis the mastermind of the king throw? Managers from the 80s defending deep or the low block as it’s called today. Inverted full backs his invention? When you are battering teams with the very best players why not push the full backs his invention further up? Absolute rubbish.

Wait until someone invents 4-4-2 to be the next master technician.
Pep is a horrible individual who thrives on success.
Give him wolves see if he survives relegation then rebuilds back.

So football has never innovated? Did Scotland not start passing the ball in the 19th century and befuddle England? Even the fact keepers now need to be good on the deck is Pep-influenced. To use your own example, defending deep has a history of innovation too - catenaccio and its antecedents.

Like I’ve said, even among all the other managers and the best teams, his are statistically the best. That, together with the many trophies, and the countless anecdotal evidence from former players, suggests he knows a thing or two - maybe even more than you.

He doesn’t manage Wolves because he’s in high demand because of his ability - like why Mbappe doesn’t play for Wolves.

You can’t just say ‘absolute rubbish’ because your argument lacks substance and hope for the best.

So what

40 trophies to fergusons 49 in half the time. Klopp won 1 league title in 9 years people love to forget that
Hardly a fair comparison given the wealth at Pep's disposal. Ferguson's achievement from rags to riches is significantly more impressive. Also, without the cheating from City, Klopp would have cleaned up.

The authorities need to start with the small stuff Ala Guiliana and his broken window theory cleaning up NYC back in the 80s. The gaffer boxes are the ideal place to start. Before the season starts tell the planet that any gaffer outside his box is automatically booked, no ifs no buts. Do it again and it’s a red card and into the dressing room. They know what the box is for as do the owners and the crowds. If any gaffer is stupid enough to do it then the fans, owners and those below him know that it’s the gaffers stupid fault…….
Keep doing it year in year out. After a season of that start clamping down on the next pointless childishness. Obviously while upgrading the current refs who seem lost when needing to use their own judgement.

Rags is stretching it mind. United were underachieving when Ferguson took over but they still had good players and were a huge club and able to go out and spent decent amounts.

They were able to entice the best players throughout Fergie’s reign. I’ve always thought he has been turned into some kind of God unnecessarily. Right place at the right time and jumped at the right time too. There was always plenty of cheating going on at United.

But wave your hand for an imaginary card and you get booked!

The law makers don't help themselves at times.
