Both went to school in England didn't they? I don't have a problem when they come across as kids and are brought through English schools/academies. It's the lads who learn their trade in SA then come across who I don't think should be in.

I'm exactly the same. I've only seen their birthplace.

Hales look a very good prospect but not sure his technique is tight enough yet. I'd be tempted to have a look at Andrew Gale, doesn't open for Yorkshire in the championship (Not sure why) but solid in defence and seems to have an opening bat's temperment.

amazing the turnaround in him, coz he was pretty poor at Essex

Yeah - Ive kept a bit of an eye on him since England under 19s. He ran Stoneman out 3 innings in a row both before and during the Under 19 world cup the third of which lead to Stoneman smashing a pillar with his bit in the changing room which caused the roof to cave in  He was sent home in disgrace

However back to Chopra - just throwing his name forward because there doesnt really seem to be many plausible options about.

probably the first thing Stoneman has middled in his life ;)

he is a better player because he is out of the glare of batting up the order.

Michael Clarke bats at 5 leave him at 5, where he is flourishing

I think there might be more to it than that, he seems like he's thrived since Flower took over as coach and seems to have more confidence/presence when batting- but I suppose I'm just guessing. You're second point is fair, but imagine how many more runs he could score if he batted at 3?
If Strauss was out of the team, would you be in favour of bringing a new player in to open, or bring in a middle order player in (someone who could bowl perhaps) and expect the other batsman to be flexible?

I would lob Trott to open , move KP to 3 and stick Stokes at 4
