The FA cup

They’re claiming the 4 EFL members agreed to it.

Steve Kavanagh from Millwall is on that board.

He says no such discussions have ever taken place and he says the idea is a joke.

Millwall have and said it’s a shite idea.

The discussion was months ago and was linked to the EPL funding that they've now backtracked on.

The EFL wishes to clarify further its position in respect of yesterday’s Premier League and Football Association bi-lateral announcement over the removal of FA Cup replays and the role of the League’s representatives on the Professional Game Board (PGB).

The agreement which now sees the abolition of replays from the competition format was agreed solely between the Premier League and FA. Ahead of the deal being announced there was no agreement with the EFL nor was there any formal consultation with EFL Clubs as members of the FA and participants in the competition.

In September 2023, the EFL did initially discuss with Clubs potential changes to the FA Cup format but only as part of a wider and more fundamental change to financial distributions. As is now clear, there has been no movement in this area since September.

This latest agreement between the Premier League and the FA, in the absence of financial reform, is just a further example of how the EFL and its Clubs are being marginalised in favour of others further up the pyramid and that only serves to threaten the future of the English game.

The EFL today calls on both the Premier League and the FA, as the Governing body, to re-evaluate their approach to their footballing partnership with the EFL and engage more collaboratively on issues directly affecting our Clubs.

A separate issue is the role of the EFL representatives on the Professional Game Board (PGB) in agreeing to the 2024/25 overall fixture calendar. PGB is there to make technical decisions across the game as opposed to key policy decisions such as competition changes or formats.

Any decisions taken on the calendar involving EFL representatives are in no way an endorsement of the joint deal agreed between the FA and Premier League that imposes changes to the FA Cup competition format in isolation.

As part of the discussions the EFL representatives did challenge the position and were told that Clubs would be comfortable with no replays. They were effectively advised that, as a result, of it being an FA competition, the fixture list needed to be agreed as presented. It is also important to note that this matter was not discussed by the FA Cup committee, a separate group that oversees the competition across the professional and national game.

Thats shocking if its true..

What has happened to the FA Cup?

It used to be such a big deal from the early stages to the anticipation of the 3rd round draw. The thrill of giant killing teams and magical cup runs and the rare chance of glory at Wembley.

The run up to the Cup Final itself built the tension then Cup Final Day itself was amazing. Flicking between the coverage on BBC1 and ITV in the morning and early afternoon then settling down to watch the match and afterwards heading straight out to the filed with your mates and a ball and relive those moments in the match again.

That has all gone now. The heart and soul ripped out by corporate greed, destroyed by the ever increasing demand for money.
If you played a big team like Man Utd, Liverpool, Spurs etc you knew the first team would be playing, nowadays it’s their second string.

Make it as true of a knockout competition of all teams as much as possible. Top 295 teams get a bye to Round 1. Other 434 teams play a qualifying round, leaving a Round 1 of 512 teams. Does mean a Premier League team winning the thing would play 10 games instead of 6, but it would be 10 spread throughout all of the season and not 6 from January. Plus no excuse to not just throw the very junior academy players into a game if a top team were drawn against Met Police or something.

Would reduce fixture congestion of the really small teams that start in the Preliminary rounds as opposed to even the Qualifying rounds as they'd probably win one game, then get a conference team and get knocked out.

Seems like EVERY competetion, be it at home or abroad is beng turned into a simple gravy train for about 6 or 7 clubs.
The Premiersdhip is fast becoming a closed shop for relegated Prem teams to have the one season off the gravy train, with parachute payments easing their return.
The F.A cup, what used to be a showpiece is now a sideshow until the semis, when the big clubs , bring out the big guns and simply buy it, along with all the rest of the "Titles" they bought.
I honestly don't know how the fans "Lap this up"..Its not a victory, its simply a mathmatical formula that works for the most part with an odd "Hiccup", now they are trying to do away with the odd "Hiccup", in the worlds oldest cup competetion.... cos Liverpool Arsenal, Chelsea, Man City etc, might get f.ucking indegestion?
Roll on the sodding collapse of this crock of crap!
