The crowd at the SOL ....

The atmosphere from Sheffield United play off has never been beaten in my opinion. The mist coupled with the racket really was something. I do think it's become more and more sterile as time has gone on although the Defoe derby game was pretty good as well.
I bet you haven't even been since the Sheff Utd play off

If someone gets us performing it will be incredible, as a rule there is not enough to shout about.

Clearly a smart investor will be able to see the potential, it would not take much to make us fly, the atmosphere at times last season was brilliant.

We are good, someone with brass just needs to realise it.

I think atmospheres in England are generally poor. It's just not something we do well and something that all seater stadia have contributed to. I go home and away and I honestly can't remember the last time I came away from an away ground and thought "wow, that was loud".

Having said that, when ours is good, it's a match for anyone. They're few and far between, but the Everton and Chelsea games last season are a reminder of what we can do. Circumstances contribute and a 1.30pm kick off on a Sunday against Burnley in November is never going to be anything other than flat, unless what's happening on the pitch lifts everyone.

Those Everton and Chelsea games are right up there with the very best I've ever been in, along with when Phillips bagged his 2nd against the Mags, Sheff Utd play-off semi and Chelsea when we beat them 4-1. The other standout atmosphere at the SOL was for England v Turkey. It was brilliant.

When a mag comes on here and is being backed up in an argument with a Sunderland fan with more 'likes' than 'posts' I think that gives a decent indicator on who was in the wrong on this one.
This is why rivs gets in so many dull tedious debates on here because even when he's clearly wrong he just goes on and on and on.
When he's right he makes sure he brings it up countless times as well mind! ;)

Night games in recent years that stand out are Burnley (Edwards) Man Utd and Chelsea in the cup (despite the lower attendance) and Everton last season.

In terms of recent home derby games I missed Defoe one but the Borini 2-1 for me was the best in recent times.

In the early days of the SoL our crowd was superb in terms of vocal support. Sadly its no longer the case. Yes its still better than most for noise if we have just scored, but for the most part we are like most other supporters, where the ground is often a morgue. That's not a dig at us, its the just the way football has gone.

He's not bothered though mate, can we remember that please.

Couldn't have put it better myself. It isn't a dig like you say it's just the way of things.

Completely agree, atmospheres are totally flat these days compared to a dozen or so years ago.

The standard of the football doesn't help mind, too many mind-numbing games with a massive focus on getting at least a point and three being a bonus doesn't raise the hackles.

Agree with this too. The way the noise travels in the SOL is a problem too. Depending on where you sit, some people will think it's poor and some will think it's better.

My seat is in the East Stand block U3 so nearer the North Stand than the South and I'd say the South Stand is hardly ever loud. That's not a go at people before anyone has a go. I'll come away from the match and read on here that the South Standers can't hear the away fans yet I've heard more of the away fans than the South Stand.

I sat in the West Stand for the Palace game this season, pretty much opposite my normal seat and I was much more impressed with the South Stand from that position than my normal seat. What that told me is that the SWC join in much more than I had thought previously.

So that's 2 different seats and 2 totally different experiences and all pretty much because of which part of the ground is between me and the South Stand. One is the SWC and the other is the family bit.

Again, I'm not having a go at anyone just giving my opinion. I'll reiterate I think atmospheres in England are poor everywhere.

Just to summarise the thread:

Sometimes our atmospheres great, sometimes our atmospheres shite.

Two posters couldn't even manage to make a simple bet between themselves and instead of PMing eachother they're boring the whole board with tedious shite in a bid to prove who was in the wrong even though no one cares.

This place isn't quite what it once was and has gone to the dogs, a bit like the atmosphere at the sol

People moaning about the atmosphere these days compared to Reid era etc. What the fuck do you expect with our recent home record? Its testament to our fans that they actually turn up 40k+ every other week.

That's the best I've heard in years like.
It's always circumstances that contribute to noise and overall atmosphere. It was to and fro in a vitally important game against a top team that few would have predicted we'd get anything from. Most people had barely recovered from the equaliser then Defoe smashed home a winner. It was brilliant and the kind of thing that happens so rarely it's even more special because of it. It's the kind of thing that will still be spoke about in 20, 30 and 40 years.
