The craic in the USA

It's not. People need to remember that the average American doesn't live in Alabama.
If 14 states say that going to church to congregate is more important that social distancing, then you can make a very good case that its not just a "deeply religion" minority who are pushing the matter.

Which 14 states? I'd be willing to bet that the overlap there is heavy between Fox News viewing, low population, and low coronavirus infection rates thus far.

Agree 100%

And a few from places where the governors have otherwise been pretty sensible in this crisis.

Separately, reports are that several hundred people a day are dying at home in NYC from this and not being recorded in official figures.

That's probably true. There'll be a lot that now don't have insurance after being laid off.

I don't think we'll ever know the true toll as those that die out of hospital will need to be tested post mortem and i can't see that being too high on the priority list.

All you will be able to do is aggregate the number of deaths in a county in the last 5 years against the deaths this year and the difference should give you a decent estimate of Covid victims

I guess it comes down to how approximate they want to be. They'll probably need to take into account the respective ages of the deceased and compare that against prior years as well.

At the end of the day it's going to be a best guess scenario

As an American, I can assure you we have our fair share of dumb f*cks who will do anything for a moment of "fame".

Sadly, it isn't an American phenomenon. We Americans apparently have an uncanny ability to get it onto mass media.

Key fact checks of Trump briefing
The daily briefing has ended. Some key fact checks and falsehoods from Trump:

He falsely suggested the pandemic was not predictable when, in fact, the US intelligence community, public health experts and officials in Trump’s own administration had warned for years that the country was at risk from a pandemic, including specific warnings about a coronavirus outbreak.
He falsely said the testing in the US is “better” than any other country in the world. In fact, some of the initial coronavirus tests sent out to states were seriously flawed – some did not even work. The CDC had insisted it would manufacture the tests itself, creating further problems.
He tried to suggest that Obama’s handling of H1N1 was worse than his handling of Covid-19, when in fact Obama declared an emergency within two weeks of a first confirmed US case.
He falsely said airline passengers were getting tests upon landing, which is not true.
He attacked the inspector general report about testing shortage as politically motivated from an Obama appointee, when in reality, the official behind the report has had a long career with the non-partisan office.
He also said the country would open “sooner than people think”, even as health officials are warning of a gradual return from current restrictions.

Trump says country will reopen 'sooner than people think' – as it happened

In all honesty, the Guardian isn't necessarily very neutral when it comes to politics. That they would go on ad nauseum about Trump "lying" isn't proof. Though common sense dictates the guy is a malignant narcissist.

it was appalling how he closed down any question from reporters that in any way detracted from his "we're doing great" mantra. even when he was given examples of where either testing wasn't happening as he said, funding wasn't as available or equipment wasn't where or in the amounts he said it was he just shut them down and repeated how well everything was going...

there's just no point listening as it's all bullshit.
