Pink Lane another battle area along with Bowers Cafe, older lads will know about these places, no police control in those days.

people say you should not scrap at footy those days every time v mags you had no option at theirs the so called lads always sussed you or a 100 safc walking together stands out mile hoolis or other we were a target so what do you do run - lay down - fight your corner - or shake hands with a big mag who wants to smack you - they hated us after that day thats what made it even worse they just could not take it from sland - i recon that day safc lit a fuse that went on for years yes it happend in the early 70s beforehand but this day was a massive turning point -and for those living around roker park 70s before this day how many windows did your dad replace after they came down to us - pubs wrecked - kids smacked by old mag piss heads - it was time to stand up and we did whatever sum think ....

A smashing thread lads, we got into a few scrapes with Newcastle lads when segregation was much less but mostly small skirmishes outside Roker Park in 60's, nothing on such a scale. As many have said it sometimes couldn't be avoided back then but control is much tighter now and with the hatred whipped up is probably necessary but the atmosphere suffers too.
 
I am just another fan from south shields. never been a gang member. I was at Ollie Burtons Testimonial, wasnt at the battle of Bath Lane, but was at the match. Scared to death at the testimonial match, got chased out of the Gallowgate through Newcastle. Legged it as fast as I could. Was different in 79.....we were all up for it....being from shields I was sick of mags crowing, they thought we would just let them attack us without fighting back. For some reason they think that as fellow North Easteners and Sunderland fans we are "softer" than them, although we are from the same area and are basically the same people. The fighting after the match was unbelievable....they attacked us in the streets down to the station. We just got stuck into them and they couldnt believe it when we hammered them. And we did..........................

I was proud to be a Sunderland fan that day.

I was at Ollie Burton's testimonial, too but we got away relatively unscathed. Probably cos I didn't have me colours on! Right soft shite, me. :)

Proud to be a sunderland fan?? Any moron who thinks that having a mindless ruck with another set of fans over a game of football are utter morons mind!
That's not just us it's any set of fans. Absoloute clowns!
 
I was too young, However, my brother was there and he tells a story of how himself and the girl he was with (both 13 at the time) were beaten up by 5 blokes in there 30/40s. Brave lads these Mags in the 1970s.:oops:

Football hoolys back then remind me of scousers. Nothing was their fault. Nothing. Not even the deaths. They speak of some sort of honour whereby scarfers/women/kids were never targetted when they blatantly were. We were banned from Europe and it was UEFA's fault - it was the Belgians fault - it was the stadiums fault. Football attendances plummeted because of the violence but that wasn't their fault. It was the police's fault. It was the other team's fault. Never ever theirs.

They were scum then and they are scum now.

Now I'm fully aware that some innocent people may get caught up in it from time to time and that's what makes these scumbags even worse!
These idiots will no doubt be the same toerags who end up rolling about on nights out every other weekend whilst proclaiming it to be somebody else's fault!
I've never had any trouble at football or on nights out with my mates so if I can avoid it completely quite why others can't is beyond me..

As I understood it, both the last, and second last trains arrived at Newcastle at the same time, due to one being held up on the bridge used by the main line. This resulted in lads from both trains leaving the station together and the rest is history.

The 70's were a different kettle of fish than the 80's , especially the mid 70's when to be fair the police hadn't got to grips with what was going on a wholesale scale ,and going with your dad nearly ten years later would have reduced the risk to nigh on zero.

Looking back the best part of 40 years ago , they were great times following the lads , things happened then which would be national news now but football has changed , society has changed and I'm a damn sight older and no doubt I've changed , for the better or the worse everything's moved on.

I've been to nearly 60 different away grounds now , I see some of the same lads who stood with me and others on the Roker End a lifetime ago , the same kind of loyalty that years ago would have meant standing rather than running.

Preaching about the right and wrongs about what went on years ago is pointless, move on , the rest of us have.
