There was loads there that day. There's a fair chance some are no longer with us. It's even more than likely that many won't still attend games or be on this forum.
Some of the fiercest fighting took place along the sides, not necessarily the front.

One of us is wrong mate. I meant Ollie Burton 's Testimonial at The Piggery 1973 I think. Nothing like Bath Lane in 79. We got a bit more organised during the years between those games.

Yes indeed, always a nice spot to walk past after the game, especially a night game. A special mention to where they used to park the busses "The Haymarket" or something like that. Another nice spot for an ambush. Point is lads had taken their fill of Mags taking the mick at Roker and thro their.

For Ollie Burton"s testimonial match , we didn't even get out of the station , there was such a reception committee waiting outside , we were escorted onto the train back to sunderland by plod.

I was at that match and always wondered way there was such a poor turn out of Sunderland fans.

"Luckily" we went by bus. As stated on earlier posts no escorts back then so we only had to get past them outside the coach park, outside the gallowgate, in the gallowgate , outside the ground and back into the coach park. Wish some nice copper had just turned me back round and let me go home.
THIS IS WHY WE HATE THE MAGS. Keegan helped with that as well to be fair.
Go to enough away games back then its either fight or flight and sometimes flight was out. To the people who turn their noses up at violence at football what would you do? Sit down and cry, hoping they would let you be. IMHO it was nearly impossible to avoid you or your mates getting into some sort of bother one way or another it found you. You did NOT have to look for it.

We got on the train at Boldon expecting it to be rammed with us lot , next to no one on the train except some mags from Boro iirc , they pointed us out to the daft lads in the station and that was us sorted , fuck me we were only about 15 at the time.

Shitting myself was an understatement .

cochise was their hes a gateshead lad he knocked around with all us everyone new each other from frankie in peterlee to sammy smith in ryhope and this lad ran the gateshead buses for years with geordie newman standing up for his mates time n time again ...
