Selection of Woakes reminds me of the old-school thinking where you had to have a dedicated all-rounder in your team, even if said all-rounder was 'fairly good' at best with bat and ball. eg Derek Pringle, David Capel, Craig White. At test level an all-rounder should be world class in one or other, eg Kallis, Botham, Flintoff, even Colly could justify his selection on batting alone. They should be the cream of cricket not a jack of all trades.

County Averages ffs. How many players had cracking county averages but not made the step up for England? Neil Fairbrother springs to mind.
Anyone who doesn't think Flintoff in his prime was world class is either on glue or got an anti-Fred chip on his shoulder. (Admittedly shocking at start and end of his career)

he has spells of it maybe but look at his bowling average same as broads or round about look at his batting average low 30s

A summer of dry slow pitches comes to a conclusion on the driest and slowest of them all. Gonna be a much more interesting series in Oz.
How come they could ask the 3rd umpire if that was a catch when Australia had no reviews left?
Umpires reviewed it not the players![]()
