The Ashes - Fifth Test, The Oval

Selection of Woakes reminds me of the old-school thinking where you had to have a dedicated all-rounder in your team, even if said all-rounder was 'fairly good' at best with bat and ball. eg Derek Pringle, David Capel, Craig White. At test level an all-rounder should be world class in one or other, eg Kallis, Botham, Flintoff, even Colly could justify his selection on batting alone. They should be the cream of cricket not a jack of all trades.

Kallis and Botham are all-time greats man.
Flintoff wasn't world class with either bat or ball and interesting, Woakes' county record is considerably better than Fred's.
Colly would be lucky if he bowled half a dozen overs a match, he's an all-rounder just like Trott isn't.[DOUBLEPOST=1377261737][/DOUBLEPOST]

You ever watch him between 2002 and 2005?

2003 you mean? Saffers at home where he broke through, eventually, after about 5 years?

Did you see him before and after?

County Averages ffs. How many players had cracking county averages but not made the step up for England? Neil Fairbrother springs to mind.

Anyone who doesn't think Flintoff in his prime was world class is either on glue or got an anti-Fred chip on his shoulder. (Admittedly shocking at start and end of his career)

Loads. OK then. If you aren't going to use County performances, what criteria are you going to use to asses players? And how do you know if anyone will step up until they try it?

Three or four great series in 10 years, waste of talent. His prime lasted about 18 months, that's the problem.

He probably was to be fair, abit for short spells of time. Pity he didn't apply himself correctly, being 2 stone overweight for the best part of his career certainly didn't help. Funny how he got himself into proper shape for some mickey mouse boxing match....

A summer of dry slow pitches comes to a conclusion on the driest and slowest of them all. Gonna be a much more interesting series in Oz.

This.

Must've been one of the least inspiring Ashes series in living memory: dull pitches, turgid batting and long periods of negative tactics and poor bowling.[DOUBLEPOST=1377276528][/DOUBLEPOST]anyone listening to TMS?

Aggers: "Did you see the Massai warriors Geoffrey?"

Boycott: "I did! I saw you on the television. Chelsea'll probably sign them."

Aggers: "They're cricketers, Geoffrey."

Boycott: "I don't care, they sign anybody different."
