The longest distance ships have been confirmed as being seen is 200 miles. And lighthouses have been seen from up to 150 miles away.

Relevant also is naval guns range. Up to 24 miles.

Maybe, but cases elsewhere before they discovered it could indicate otherwise I guess.

Indian Ocean. Bombay Steamer. 1895. I think is the furthest corroborated ship seen at sea, I could find. Its not a specialist knowledge area of mine for sure though.

The mountain isn't, sure, although as it is the same principles it is indirectly relevant. As if you take curvature into account, based on spherical trigonometry, you really shouldn't be seeing Switzerland from Spain, when you are claiming a ship disappears over the horizon at 12 mile, which is less than Newcastle to Sunderland - which is as far as you can see at sea.

To be fair I don't know. I would guess direct as it was practically if not literally predating radar. Although I would happily be corrected. It was 1941 per Dr Guinness
