Team/Squad as it stands

If we made no further signings (imagine!) we’d play three at the back with Cirkin and Winchester either side of Batth. Believe we did similar before Winchester’s injury? Wing backs from Gooch, Hume and Huggins (if he’s ever fit again). You look at the defence as it stands, with one recognised CB signed up, and it’s pretty obvious where the bulk of the work needs doing this summer.

We have decent options in midfield, particularly through the middle, but are a little short on quality out wide and definitely in need of another forward who can lighten Stewart’s load. Backup or competition for Patto is a must as well.

There’s a fair amount to contend with really, especially if Wright declines our offer. The starting XI (defence being the issue) as it stands would do well to finish outside the relegation places.

So if by some miracle we achieve promotion what comes next? Do we pay them all off and go out and buy a Premiership squad?

Patience is required here for a period of consolidation. The squad needs to evolve rather than us trying to buy a new one. Not that there would be the money to do that. Top half in our first Championship season would represent very good progress.
What's wrong with going for promotion?

Morrison would be a cracking signing. We need someone different, with a bit of an edge to his game, in the tight games he will be THE difference imo. All the top players have that 'arrogance' about them. Agree, it is a risk but definitely one worth taking. He seemed to knuckle right down at Derby, if you read the Derby fans opinions of him. Bit like Roberts he can feed off our fans adoring him, look at what it done for Roberts and it made him sign an extra 2 yrs, whereas before he has never settled anywhere.

Yep can't disagree with that. Hopefully not too long before they start coming through the door.....
I remain unconvinced with Morrison but will support him and hope we can be part of a redemption tale for him. Has the Derby supporter that posts regularly on here commented on the deal? Can’t remember his name off the top of my head.

You think that team won’t struggle? Embarrassing.
Didn’t we play QPR and look just as good as them? And that was when they were on form too. Both sides put out a first team and it looked like an upper championship game of football.

I think people dramatise the jump in difficulty from league one to championship. I’d argue our players are better suited to championship football than league one football.

Yep, we would be torn a new arsehole pace wise regarding the defence there.

Baffled by those who are afraid of success and think we need to aim for mid table. We're the biggest club in the division. Need to act like it.

They should be targeting signings that can kick on for us in the league above, much like we did in January. If we achieve promotion and the players aren't premiership quality, they could be sold on to Championship squads looking to go up.

The fact that virtually none of our current squad would be likely to make the step up to the Premiership the season after.
Most would have said the same of Sheffield and a few other sides that have managed fairly quick promotions. A year of playing well enough to get promoted would mean they were quite different players in terms of development and confidence.

...get away man. So you wouldn't want the joy or euphoria of makimg it to the big time after watching 4 yrs of Fleetwood, Accrington Stanley, Wimbledon etc?...aye lets just hang around mid table because we are scared of going up again. Bloody hell, bet you are a load of joy at a party🤣;)

Exactly mate. You can't pick and choose when you get promotion, top 6 should be the minimun aim imo. This league is nothing to be afraid of. Some of our supporters petrify me at times with their reluctance to have any ambition whatsoever.

I think there was probably an argument for building and being in a position to compete in premier league without vast changes, somewhat like us under Reid but I think those days may be gone, the difference in financial circumstances means you simply can’t keep the best players long enough to properly develop and consequently promotion should always be the aim.

Yeah, like you say mate them days are gone. You've got to spend money just to survive if you reach the Premier League, there is no romance anymore of keeping faith with the team that got you promoted, you might scrape by 1 season but it will eventually catch up with you.

But in this hypothetical situation we would have a strong championship side that could be further strengthened before the next season. I’m hoping for promotion personally and after the last 4 years it’s great to be optimistic and back somewhere near the minimum level the club should be at.

there's a difference between aiming and spending though. i'm all for back to back promotions but i wouldnt want to see us spunking money up the wall trying to get into the premiership, or staying there if by some miracle we went up.

i'd be perfectly happy with mid table next season, if we got promoted to the premiership i'd expect relegation and use the surprise cash injection to put the club in a better position, rather than gambling going back to square one debt wise

Centre mid is the most interesting position. We’ve got Evans, O’Nien, Neil and Matete. All have question marks and I wouldn’t like those 4 to be our options going into the season.

you think? i'd be perfectly happy with at least one of those stepping up, i'd love to add one quality name to that bunch. but at absolute worst i could live with them if we added REAl quality in other areas.

at CB we have danny batth and that's it. i'd say thats far far far far far more important to get sorted!
